4386.0. "VLAN trunking " by TPOV07::TONYCHENG () Thu May 01 1997 06:51

    I am working on a network project. Our competitor is Xylan Omniswitch.
    My customer wants the VLAN function trunking across FDDI backbone and
    also wants the IP/IPX routing functions between the VLANs.

    As I know, our DECswitch 900EF firmware V1.6 has provided VLAN function
    trunking across FDDI to other switchs but no routing function.
    However, we have another choice is the DECswitch 900EF runs the distributed
    routing software V2.0. In reference the distributed routing software SPD
    V2.0, it has provided VLAN port group function on switch but never talks
    about VLAN trunking function. My question is, Does the DRS V2.0 support
    VLAN trunking across FDDI to other switchs ?

    If the answer is no, I hope someone can help me the alternative solution.

                             FDDI BACKBONE
            +--------+----------------+-----------------+-----------+
                     |                |                 |
                     |                |                 |
               +-----------+    +-----------+     +-----------+
               | 900EF /MP |    | 900EF /MP |     | 900EF /MP |
               +-----------+    +-----------+     +-----------+
                |    |    |      |    |    |       |    |    |

                V7   V2   V3     V1   V2   V3      V1   V2   V3

   V1 = VLAN 1
   V2 = VLAN 2
   V3 = VLAN 3

   Best Regards

    One alternative would be to place a Router between the VLAN
    ports on a switch. For example:

                                 FDDI BACKBONE
                +--------+----------------+-----------------+-----------+
                         |                |                 |
                         |                |                 |
                   +-----------+    +-----------+     +-----------+
                   | 900EF /MP |    | 900EF /MP |     | 900EF /MP |
                   +-----------+    +-----------+     +-----------+
                    |    |    |      |    |    |       |    |    |

                    V7   V2   V3     V1   V2   V3      V1   V2   V3
                                     |    |    |
                                     |    |    |
    				    +-----------+
                                    | Router    |
                                    +-----------+
