4382.0. "VNswEA and ATMworks350L" by BPSOF::KIRALY (Endre Kirly) Tue Apr 29 1997 07:47

Hi,

Our customer has a VNswitchEA (in a MS900 hub), and an Intel NT 4.0 server with
an ATMworks 350L in it. We use the latest ORCA 3.0 (Efficient) software for the
ATMworks350L, the ATM card is connected to the VNswEA directly with UTP cable,
and there is a PC connected to one of the Ethernet port of the VNswitch:

                            -----------------             ---------
                           |   Ethernet port-|-----------|    PC   |
 ----------                |                 |           | Netbeui |
| NT4.0 Srv|               |      VNswEA     |           | (TCPIP) |
| ORCA 3.0 |  Br. Tunnel   |                 |            ---------
| ATMw350L------------------- Interface 13   |
| Netbeui  |    VCI=100    |                 |
 ----------                 -----------------

 - Both of the ATM leds on ATMworks350L and VNswitchEA light, so the physical
   connection seemes to be correct
 - We defined Bridge Tunnel (rfc 1483) on both side
 - VCI numbers are defined correctly on both side (=100)
 - The state of bridge tunnel is UP on VNswEA
 - The state of Interface 13 is UP on VNswEA
 - VNswEA-PC connection is correct, ie. ping from the PC to the VNswEA works
 - we use NETBEUI both of the NT server and PC client.

Everething seemes to be fine but the connection between the NT server and the PC
doesn't work.

What's wrong? Had anybody ever tried this type of ATM configuration?

Thanks,

Endre

So, ping between the VN and the PC works ok? And ping between the VN and the
NT server works ok?

Is it a FDDI or Eth bridge tunnel?

Dan
4382.2ping is not ok as wellBPSOF::BPSNKE.bps.DEC.COM::kiralyWed Apr 30 1997 03:4810
Dan

1. Ping is OK between PC and VNswEA, and is not OK between NT and VNsw. With tcp/ip the
situation is the same as with Netbeui.

2. This is an Ethernet encapsulation of course, ATMworks350L does not support FDDI

4382.3maye UTP cabling problem?BPSOF::BPSNKE.bps.DEC.COM::kiralyWed Apr 30 1997 06:1623
Another question:

We used standard straight-through UTP cable between ATMworks350L and VNswEA, and leds
were ok, so we thought the cabling was correct. But, there is a note in the ATMworks350L
Installation Guide which mentions "The pinout of the ATM adapters Category 3 and 5 UTP
jack is different than a standard Ethernet UTP jack". The ATM pinout on the
ATMworks adapter is:

	1 --- Transmit +
	2 --- Transmit -
	...
	7 --- Receive +
	8 --- Receive -

Is ATM port pinout of VNswEA the same? What kind of pinout of UTP cable must be used,
cross wired or straight-through?

thanks,

4382.5A crossover cable might be needed...NETCAD::BATTERSBYWed Apr 30 1997 10:344
    Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you may have to use a BN25H
    crossover cable to connect two ATM devices to each other.
