4378.0. "ClearVISN license issue; How to get one if you upgrade?" by KAOT01::WATTERS () Fri Apr 25 1997 16:44

Another major issue w/ licenses for ClearVISN.

If a customer upgrades from v1.0 to v1.1 his old license numbers
no longer works. So...they call us at the CSC (Canada) wondering what's
    going on.
    - We then tell them to get a new license number.
    - Contract Admin then gets the call and they're bewildered too (ie.
What do you mean you need an update license?)

The customer has bought the 'media & documentation' kit, the 'phone
support' and the 'write to copy'; I'm not a "part#" kind of guy so
I don't have them handy now (can get them if need though).
    Question is:
What does one need to purchase to automatically get the license
(or update license kit) and also; are they being charged for this????

If I'm missing information, feel free to ask.

    Thanks,

    Andy

I don't have a solution. But I have been getting similar queries at the
    CSC here, in the UK.

What I have suggested to the Sales folks when they have called me
asking the same question is that the following should apply. Attempting
to be fair to all parties.

    * Existing customer with buys upgrade. We give him the licence,
if he was previously licenced to run clearVISN.

    * New customer - customer buys licence.

Have not had any problems with that so far. Perhaps someone could
confirm that I am doing the right thing by DEC and the customer.

This is what I got from the product manager; quite the mess eh? ;*)

Andy, I don't believe we are requiring anything different than any other
product - the difference is that we have more enforcement than a lot of
other PC applications - not quite as good as LMF, but still if the
customer doesn't order what he's supposed to order, he won't be able to
install the product.

If they have only bought MDDS and phone support, then they didn't buy
the update license or update license service (NVLS). So they haven't
really paid enough to run the new version.

In addition to getting the new media and documentation, they need an
update license for each application. they can purchase these
individually with each new release, or they can subscribe to an
automatic update service.

The following part number(s) will get the customer an update license for
MultiChassis Manager as an example.

QM-MQDAA-CA $199	update license - one time purchase
QT-MQDAA-TA $204	New Version License Service

I've never heard of a "right to copy" license or service.

The customer is normally charged for any new version, as new
functionality has been added - possible exceptions would be a letter
change in the version, (e.g. 1.1A to 1.1B), or they have encountered a
problem where the old SPD describes functionality that didn't work in
the old version, but has been fixed in the new version. In the latter
case, they would probably have to escalate this through their service
channels to get the new version for free.
