Note 4253.0* IMB compatibility No replies

I have a question regarding the "old" technology DH900 modules that support
6 IMB channels and the "new"
technology DH900 modules that support 12 IMB channels. Are the IMB channels
compatible between the
old and new technologies? Can I define an IMB and have for instance a
DR900-TM talk to a VNswitch 900-EA?

| Yes, you can have compatiblity between older 6 ethernet hub modules and the
newer 12 ethernet hub modules. The 1st 6 ports on a VNswitch connect to the
same 6 ethernets as the older hub modules. Ports 7-11 connect to the new 6
ethernets and if I remember correctly port 12 connects to the Thinwire or any
of the 12 ethernets in the hub.

| The first 12 ethernet ports (the top block when mounted in a DEChub900 MS) on
a VNswitch 900EE, and the only 12 ethernet ports on the other VNSwitch modules
can be mapped as follows:
1-6 any of the 6 original '6-wire' Ethernet segments.
7-10 any of the 6 new '2-wire' Ethernet segments.
11 any of the 6 new '2-wire' Ethernet segments OR a DEChub ONE AUI port.
12 any of the 6 new '2-wire' Ethernet segments OR the thinwire ethernet.
(information from SE Forum)
also remember, the same rules apply as our existing switches, a switch
port has just ONE connection, either to the front panel, OR to the backplane
(or AUI), not both.

-.1 has it exactly correct.
The LAN Interconnect view of MCM in clearVISN v1.1a labels:
6wire = "Hub900 Ethernet"
2wire = "More Hub900 Ethernet"
We were hoping to NOT surface the 2wire/6wire distinction to customers.

4253.5 | You didn't count the 'default' LAN, 13 in all. | PTOJJD::DANZAK | Pittsburgher  | Wed Mar 12 1997 22:57 | 16 |
| ER,
There are, rememebr, 13 Ethernets in all:
6 Original flexlans
6 NEW flexlans
1 Default (which someone keeps calling "thinwire" and I wish
that they'd change to "default" for MARKETING reasons!)
And, note that *one* of the original 6 flexlans maps onto the TOP
connector which allows the 90TS and 90FS to AUTOMAGICALLY use it. The
MAM sneakily moves the lan up to it if needed. (A nice trick to
rmember for some network designs when you need to throw a 90FS or TS in
it...they actually do the DEFAULT and ONE flexlan)
