4252.0. "Why no common parts 600 and 900 series???" by CGOS01::DMARLOWE (Have you been HUBbed lately?) Tue Mar 04 1997 12:10

I have a 900EX with UTP Mod Phy's on a customer site. They will also
be evaluating a MS600EX with UTP Mod Phy's. The kicker to all this is
that the 900 UTP Mod Phy's are available and I can get the 612EX but
won't be able to get a UTP Mod Phy until late March.

WHY, WHY are the UTP (and probably the 100BaseFX) Mod Phy's different
between these 2 products??? It's painful for the field, distributors
and customers that there is such a long list of parts and no commonality.
Not to mention more parts to build, test, certify and scarce
engineering resources building multiple versions of the same part.

I have a $2M account (over 2 years) in jeapordy because we are at least
a year behind in 100Mb. They are going to flip when I tell them that
they cannot evaluate any 600 series because the Mod Phy's are different
than the ones in the 900EX, that they have right now, and that they
will have to wait til late March.

4252.1Why we didn't use the same form-factor as old mod-pmd's....NETCAD::BATTERSBYTue Mar 04 1997 13:1112
My take on the difference in the older mod-pmd's and the newer
ones is this. The older ones represent a circuitry technology
design that is close to 6 years old. The newer mod-pmd's take
up less physical space, use newer (read that "current") electronic
chips and components that don't run the risk of going end-of-life
anytime soon. There are other factors which contribute to the
introduction of newer mechanical configurations I'm sure which
include such things as cost, and return-on-tooling investment for
recently introduced products (like the VNswitch, the 612EX), and
    future products.

4252.2One newer than the other??CGOS01::DMARLOWEHave you been HUBbed lately?Tue Mar 04 1997 14:107
    re. .1
In that case, which Mod Phy is based on "6" year old technology
DEXYU-AA (900EX) or the DLXTX-MA (612EX) ? Do either of these use the
same components as the DEFXU-xx that's used in NIC cards or the FDDI
    GIGAswitch?

4252.3I think I cleared up part of my own confusion...but :-)NETCAD::BATTERSBYTue Mar 04 1997 14:5616
Sorry Dave, I'm not sure what product you are referring to
when you abbreviate as in "900EX".....are you referring to
    VNswitch 900EX?
In any case, I'm as confused as you are about the mod-somethings.
I just went out to our lab and got totally dazzled with mod-phy,
    mod-mac, mod-pmd.

I was talking about the mod-pmd types that were used on the DECswitch
900EF, 900MX wiring concentrators, Gigaswitch line cards etc.
Those are the ones which have a physical form-factor legacy that
dates back 6-7 years. The newer ones have chips different from
each other, but are all new electronics compared to the old mod-pmd's
I was referring to. Sorry for the confusion, as now having looked
at a few, I'm now confused too.

When we were doing the documentation for these products, this is how
the modular media interface family was defined. MMI is the term for a
modular interface used in any NPB product.

    Families of MMIs
    -----------------
MM-10s (Modular Media for ethernet. Today, used in the Hub 624T, adhers
to AUI Interface standard. Plans for future use in other products.

    These include:
    			DLXFI 10BaseFL MM-10
    			DLXAU 10Base5
    			DLXUT 10BaseT
    			DLXTW 10Base2
    			DLXRA Reverse AUI

MM-100s (For MII Fast ethernet modular media interfaces. Today used in
the VNswitch and MultiSwitch 600, except for the MultiSwitch 612EX)

    	DEXYM-AA	100BaseTX
    	DEXYU-AA	100BaseFX MM-100
    	TBD 10BaseFL MM-100

Mod-Macs (For modular media interfaces with onboard MACS (limited
lifetime) used in MultiSwitch 612EX Only)

    	DLXTX	100BaseTX Mod Mac
    	DLXFX	100BaseFX Mod Mac
    	DLXFL	10BaseFL Mod Mac

ModPMDs (current FDDI (not front insertable) used in FDDI
concentrators, GS/FDDI and one version of the VNswitch 900EF)

ModPHYS (ATM, used in GS/ATM, VNswitch 900EA)

    	DAGGM-AA
    	DAGGU-AA
    	DAGGS-AA
    	DAGGE-AA
    	DAGGT-AA
    	DAGE1-AA
    	DAGT1-AA

Mod FDDI (for new front insertable FDDI modular media interface.
Currently used in one variant of the VNswitch 900EF).

    	DEFYM-AA
    	DEFYU-AA
    	DEFYS-AA

I hope this helps a bit. We did this process for the documentation
    folks.
