4230.0. "PS900TP: Groups and TW?" by LEMAN::PAIVA (Hawkeye - Network Support @GEO) Thu Feb 20 1997 16:39

    Hi!

I am experiencing the following problem (or lack of understanding):

    I have 2 Portswitch 900TP (V2.1.1) and 1 DECswitch 900EE (V1.7.0) in
slots 6,7 and 8 of a DH900 (V4.2.0 or V5.0.0). All the ports of the
Portswitches belong to group 1 and the TW is assigned to group 1. The
DS900EE has ports 2, 4 and 5 redirected to the BP. Port 2 is connected to
the TW. Port 4 is connected to Lan-1 where group 1 of PS900TP in
slot 6 is connected. Port 5 is connected to Lan-2 where group 1 of
PS900TP in slot 8 is connected.

Now I have 2 stations. One connnected to any port in PS900TP slot 6 and
the other one to any port in PS900TP in slot 7. If I connect one or
both of the group 7 (TW) of the Portswitches to the TW (the
corresponding port(s) in the DS900EE becomes in backup state, the 2
stations can communicate properly (30 successful pings). If I disconnect
both group 7s from the TW, only 3 or 4 of the 30 pings will reach its
    destination.

The only idea I thought of when driving home was to assign the ThinWire
to any unused group (2 to 6)? However, it wouldn't give me an
    explanation...

Can someone shed some light in here?

    Pedro

You are eactly correct, in that you need to disconnect the two PORTswitch
900FPs from the ThinWire. This can be accomplished in a couple of ways.

One way is to use MCM, do a "view", "LAN Interconnect" and use the mouse to
disconnect the "7" stub on both of the PORTswitch 900FP modules.

The other way is to get to the Port Switch menu for each individual module
(this can be done by single clicking on the FP module on the LAN internconnect
menu and then pressing the Port Switch button on the bottom of the screen). At
this screen there is a box toward the bottom on the left hand side that
defines what group the ThinWire stub is associated with. There is a pulldown,
which can be used to reassign the group to which the ThinWire is associated.

I personally would chose the first way, since you could screw yourself up
down the road by choosing method two, if you create other LAN groups on the
900FP down the road.

    Dennis,

Well, the problem is that when I disconnect both group 7 of the
PortSwitches 900 TP, I have the problem of having only 3 or 4 among the
30 pings that are OK. Hence my posting.

The problem was the DECswitch 900EE. Once it was replaced (again...)
    everything was back in order.
