4205.0. "VLAN, DS900EF" by BPSERX::BPSORA::KIRALY (x) Fri Feb 07 1997 09:11

Hi!

At a customer site the following VLAN network worked fine for two month:

         DS900EF DS900EF

        FDDI 1 ------------------------------- 1 FDDI
        Default 5 2 Default
        Vlan A 3 3 Vlan A
        Vlan A 2 5 Vlan A
        Vlan A 7 6 Vlan A
        Vlan B 4 4 Vlan B
        Vlan B 6 7 Vlan B

Yesterday one of the switches stopped because of a power cut, and, when the
power came again, the communication between the switches, AND the
communication between ports in one VLAN group at one site crashed. It
seemed as if all ports would be in different VLANs and default VLAN wouldn't
exist as well. (Customer doesn't have CV VLAN and MC Mgr at all, so they
couldn't misconfigure anything)

All switch configuration settings which can managed with CV MC Mgr were as
before. We couldn't check the VLAN configuration because we didn't have
the proper VLAN database.

So we had to factory reset and reconfigure the switches.

My questions:

 1. Is it possible that VLAN configurations of DS900EF are demaged after a power cut?

 2. Is it possible to get existing VLAN configuration from a switch without VLAN database? If no, is this
      function planned?

 3. Does CV Recovery Mgr store/restore the VLAN configuration of switches?

Thanks,

Endre

4205.1Regarding "Does CV Recovery Mgr restore VLAN configNETCAD::BRAGDONMon Feb 10 1997 09:4326
I asked one of the clearVISN engineers about your 3rd question,
"Does CV Recovery Mgr store/restore the VLAN configuration
     of switches."

    Here is the reply:

"clearVISN V2.0 Recovery Manager will backup and restore
all read-write VLAN parameters, on a per-device basis,
    for the following devices:

    Devices
    ---------------
    DECswitch900EF
    DECswitch900FO
    PEswitch900TX

    VNswitch family

Note: the VNswitch family of devices use the new DEC Bridge Group VLAN
MIB. The DECswitch family of devices support the old DEC port-based
    VLAN
    MIB.

As of this writing, the VNswitch900EE, EA, EF, and EX will be supported
in clearVISN Recovery Manager V2.0 (and have VLAN support).
