| Yes, they can but I'm told that there is some inconsistency about
the connection working over a period of time with the current base
level of code or something to that affect. The developers apparently
know about this and are working the issue.

Bob,
That's an interesting response since I heard the opposite at the SE
Forum. It might be that I didn't understand the response, but
supposedly the VNswitch 900EA is more like a system (end station) than a
switch and would REQUIRE an ATM switch to work.
Wouldn't this be better posted in the ATM notes conference?

From an ATM perspective, a VNswitch 900EA is indeed an end station. It does
not switch cells between several ATM ports, which is what an ATM switch does.

This I am not as sure about.
If you are talking about LANE, yes, you need an ATM switch; one reason being
that the VNswitch 900EA has one ATM port and no built-in LANE servers.
If you are talking about Bridge Tunnel PVCs, this seems like something which
should work even without a switch.

| Not on the backplane. In the hub backplane the VNswitch has only
"ATM Slave" ports and thus needs to connect to an ATMswitch "master"
port.
maybe the other responders were talking about the front-panel ports.

| Yes I was referring to front panel connections.

| Well, since we are being trained on the VNswitch's here at the CSC this week. We
just finished setting up 2 VNSwitchEA's connecting them directly to each other
on the front ports and they came up fine with a bridge tunnel. They came up
automaticaly we didn't have to do a thing. Apparently they will detect what they
connected to. If they are connected to a ATM switch, they will come up as a
LEC. If it is connected to a GS/FDDI with the ATM card, they will come up with a
FDDI bridge tunnell. If 2 EA's are connected to each other, they will come up
with an Ethernet bridge tunnell.
