I believe engineering has addressed this in the 12 VLAN 900TP
replacement. I talked to the ASIC designers and they were going to add
more bits to the digital FIFO's to handle the situation. They tested
NIC cards in the lab that were so bad that even a 900TM had trouble
locking on.
The new 900TP may not be able to handle exactly the same amount of out
of tolerance clocks that the 900TM does but much more than the present
900TP does (which is only some 1.5% out of spec).
