3829.0. "RFQ question on 100BaseTX and VNswitches" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Mon Sep 02 1996 04:20
Will I be giving out any Company Confidential information if I propose
the following configuration to a customer who has four floors with multiple
Ethernet LANs on each floor and wishes to go up to a 100 Mb/s Ethernet backbone.
He also wishes to put 3 x Routers in the basement as follows:
Customer's Request. Wants it all implemented by Oct/Nov 1996.
-------------------------------------------------------------
1)There are 4 floors and each floor will have 12 to 16 Ethernets now
and will have many (??) more in future.
2)A basement with 3 x Cisco routers or 3 x Digital's RouteAbout Centrals
providing WAN connectivity. These 3 units should each have 2 Ethernet ports
and 8 Serial Ports.
3)A computer room with a 100 Mb/s switch, connecting the above 4 floors
and the basement together and to begin with, this computer room will have
2 x Alpha 2000 5/250 systems with 100 Mb/s interfaces. Also this computer room
should provide Ethernet connectivity to the 3 x routers in the basement
(i.e. via 6 x 10 Mb/s switched ports).
If allowed to, I plan to propose the following. If not, please give
suggestions.
1)Each of the 4 floors have a DEChub 900 with one VNswitch 900EX to
begin with; with one DEXYM-AA 100BaseFx MMI for multimode fiber. This will
provide 12 Ethernet Switched Ports and 1 Full Duplex (200 Mb/s) 100BaseFX
uplink to the computer room for each of the 4 floors.
2)In the Computer Room have a DEChub 900 with 3 VNswitch 900EX. Two
VNswitches with 2 x DEXYM-AA 100BaseFx MMI for multimode fiber in each VNswitch
to connect the 4 floors together and one VMSwitch with 2 x DEXYU-AA
100BaseTx MMI for UTP-5 to connect the the 2 x Alpha 2000 5/250. There will be
altogether 36 x 10BaseT Ethernet Ports on these 3 x VMSwitches out of which
only 6 x Ethernet 10BaseT ports will initially be used to connect the basement
routers' 6 x Ethernet 10BaseT ports and 30 X Ethernet ports not used (a big
waste). But we do not have a 100BaseFX or 100BaseTX device that has more 100
Mb/s ports and less 10 Mb/s ports, as far as I know.
3)A DE500-AA card in each Alpha 2000 4/250 system.
Any comments please ?

3829.1 | <----RE: .0 Forwarded to Product Manager.... | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | | Tue Sep 03 1996 14:44 | 5 |
| I've forwarded your note to the product manager Rick Forberg.
He may not provide an answer in here, but I'd think he'd likely
give you an answer by mail.
