3790.1 | You can do it! | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Mark Wu | Wed Aug 14 1996 08:53 | 10 |

Hi, It is no problem.
I always use Win95/Hubwatch to config the HUB900,
I also use Slip--OBM to config the HUB900.
It is very simple just like normal operate.
But make sure the RS232 cable is a cross-over cable.

3790.2 | How??? | SNOFS1::KHOOJEANNIE | Poles are the best post-impressionists | Wed Aug 14 1996 21:13 | 9 |
| What are the steps you took to do this?
I have installed SLIP from the Win95 CD, and in dial-up networking I
can choose between PPP and SLIP, but I don't know how to make a null
modem work either. Have tried Control Panel-Modems but this doesn't
have null modem listed.

3790.3 | Microsoft Does not support this. | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Vijay Lathia | Fri Aug 16 1996 16:13 | 19 |

I work in the clearVISN/MCM group and I had tried to this on both
Windows-NT and Windows-95 platform with the SLIP/TCP/IP software
that microsoft provides.
What I found was that: Windows-95 does not support SLIP in the
manner in which we want to use it with the HUB and MCM.
Windows-NT's SLIP is configurable, such that you can choose "null
-modem" and it also allows to invoke a SLIP session without using
a telephone #. For Windows-NT, the set-up instructions are already
provided in the MCM on-line doc.
Microsoft response response/excuse for this is:
WIN-NT is a Network Operating System and
WIN-95 is a Desktop Operating System with limited networking support.

3790.5 | Mark: Could you provide more info. | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Vijay Lathia | Tue Aug 20 1996 16:36 | 26 |
| Mark:
Is the extended software, pack95 you mentioned, from Microsoft?
OR is it the Microsoft Plus for WIN95?
In your case, after installing the extended pack95, were you
able to connect PC as
(PC)---------[HUB-900]
^
RS-232
Null-Modem Cable
to HUB OBM port
Or you had a different setup? Does this setup have Null-Modem
for modem choice and does the SLIP sofotware allow to have a
SLIP connection without using a phone #?
Pls respond with more detail, since lot of external customers
and internal DEC folks have WIN-95 and they would like to use
this capability if it works.

3790.6 | Here is Mark Wu's further response.. | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | vlathia | Fri Aug 23 1996 12:47 | 45 |
| Based on the Mark's response below, WIN-95 does not support
the direct SLIP. One can develop a custom modem drivers
using MS-WIN-DDK(Driver Developer Kit). ClearVISN development
group's view is: if Microsoft readily supports it, we will
document it, otherwise there are no plans to develop custom
drivers.

Vlathia:
Hi, I am Mark.
I am sorry that I have a mistake in Win95-Slip.
You are right the Win95-doesn't support direct-Slip.
But I found something that you can have a read
if you have Win95-DDK :
In "\Win95\INF" have some modem INF files that define the
modem's init,dial,hangup command etc.
In "\Win95\system" there have a VXD that control the modem's
hardware named "UNIMODEM.VXD".
So if you want to have a direct-link use slip,just add a modem
at COM1 in contrl-panel,
then modify the UNIMODEM.VXD's child process :
like _Dial; _Setup; ......
