3787.0. "Q's on Rtr Mgr and Utilisation" by SNOFS1::KHOOJEANNIE (Poles are the best post-impressionists) Sun Aug 11 1996 22:52

A customer has been trialling Router Manager with Ciscos, and has
reported the following problems, which I have been able to reproduce
with DECNISs in the Digital network.

    1. Boxmap -> Interface -> Utilisation: Utilisation is often displayed
to be above 100%, sometimes as high as 150%. How is "utilisation"
measured by Router Manager? What do values above 100% mean?

    2. Utilisation -> Export Data: This doesn't seem to work - when the
button is pressed, Router Manager prompts you for a .csv filename, but
the file that is created is a 1KB Excel file with no data in it, only
column headings (Date, Time, GroupID, Interface, Int In Bandwidth, Int
Out Bandwidth). How do you get the data?

    Any feedback much appreciated
    Jeannie

Hi Jeannie,

re. 2
Did you enable the LOGGING function? You can do this by right-clicking the
configuration icon. After that you can collect various data in foreground
or background.

cheers
Robert

Thanks Robert, I hadn't done this, so it's now working!

Can someone please advise on the utilisation values, and why they are
    over 100%?

The customer who is trialling Router Manager won't buy it without
clarification on how this is measured and what it means.

    Thanks
    Jeannie

    Hi Jeannie,

re .1 - check that the SNMP varible for bandwidth is set correctly on
    the interface cards.

I don't know what you have to do on the decnis but on the Cisco's you
have to manually set the bandwidth in the config script.

Also on the internal Digital WAN in australia they use compression
boxes a lot for the WAN links which might affect the figures.

And just to top it off I don't trust the utilisation figures I get from
DECNIS routers anyway. I had 2 probes monitorin a customer LAN (network
general and a PC based probe) than gave me VERY different figures that
    Router manager was showing.

    Hope this helps - Shaun
