Actually, none of the SNMP RFCs define the length of the community string.
That's why your customer is having this problem.

You have to give the switch it's own IP address to use RMON manager.
(You can get the "free" RMON alarms, events, statistics and history
information going through the Hub's Management Agent Module - which means
you do not have to give the switch its own IP address.)

so the answer is that they only support 15 character community strings
and have no plan on changing this?
It seems that a larger length would be nice since we support more on
the DEChub.

Why would you assume that was the answer when:
- I didn't say that or anything like it,
- I titled my reply "Answer to #2", trying to indicate that
I didn't have the answer to question #1. I only mentioned
the community string length not being specified as an aside.
I don't know the answer to question #1.
