Hello,
In the "DEC Professional" press release of Jun 96', I've recently read
an interesting article about Ungermann-Bass (UB) Network Management
Products (ie NetDirector & EMpower) and SUN (ie JAVA). It seems to mean
that the look-and-feel of such applications will be conformed to the
growing de-facto standard used by both Internet & Intranet worlds.
Further, System Mangement seems to follow the same way (ie AltaVista
products & packages).
Is there any plan to adapt general purpose NPBU Network Management
products by using a GUI conformed to the current market trends ?
Thank you.
Renato

| 3660.1 | This is definitely on the horizon | NAC::FORREST | Wed Jun 26 1996 09:38 | 11 | |
We are investigating what might be feasible in the realm of management
via a Web Browser. I'm not an expert in this area, but I have an idea
that it will require a lot of extra memory in the device to embed Java
applets, as UB wants to do. Their customers will have to pay for the
extra memory on the devices, whether they want to manage that way or
not. We are looking for an approach that gives the customer more
options and works for legacy devices as well as new products.
Please send your ideas in this area my way. (NAC::FORREST or

A Web Interface is already deployed in CISCO IOS release 11.0,
I think.
