3657.0. "clearVISN Router Mgr integration with NetView-NT?" by OSLLAV::BJORN (Bjrn Olav Haugom) Wed Jun 26 1996 03:49

The last couple of weeks I have had the chance to do a demo of NetView for
4 different customers, and I have used the opportunity to show clearVISN at
the same time. They are impressed, but they asks me how the two applications
(at least, they see it as two) interact. I have explained them that I did not
have the time to look into the integration part. Now that I have done so, I
have seen that we do not do real integration. (,YET, I hope).

I read the installation guide for clearVISN, and it is stated that clearVISN
will work together with a number og management applications, like NetView-NT,
OpenView and Managewise.

At the same time it is stated that if a SNMP-server is already running, it
must be stopped before clearVISN is installed. SO, it is not working with
other management applications using SNMP-server.

When installing clearVISN after NetView-NT is installed, I can't see that the
clearVISN Router Manager is integrated with NetView-NT.

What we want to see is true integration with NetView-NT, so when clicking on
a router symbol in NetView, the router manager Boxmap will show up.

On the NetView-NT PEEK3 CD, the Stonybrook Autobahn Router Manager is presented
as an integrated application in NetView, even if I haven't seen it, yet.

Words from people in the NetView-NT conference tells me that the Router Manager
we are using in clearVISN is old, and the V3.0a on the PEEK3 CD has real
integration with NetView-NT and is not bound to it's own SNMP-server.

What I'm also missing is the Configuration Manager part of the current RM
version:

Configuration Manager provides the capability to upload, download and "Diff"
configuration files.

You can only launch our own Router configurator.

But how can I configure CISCO,WELLFLEET,3COM,...with the current version ?

Next major release of RM will be called Intranet Manager V3.5 with additional
frame relay and isdn support.

When will this features be availible in the Clvisn package ?

3657.2no 3rd party configurators plannedNAC::FORRESTWed Jul 03 1996 17:4413
The Router Configurator application was developed in Reading just for
Digital routers. We are not planning configurators for the other
vendors' routers. Stonybrook also does not plan to develop such
configurators. You must use the vendor's own configurator, then the
Stonybrook application can manage the files built using the
configurator. We plan to include the Digital configuration files in
    Router Manager's configuration management capability.

These configurators do not use SNMP, instead the output is a bit image
that gets loaded onto the router. We do not have enough information
about the internals of the other vendors's routers to create these bit
    images of the configuration parameters.

Got the explanation about vendor router configuration yet.

-thanks

But after installing Stonybrook RM Autobahn for PNV on W/NT you can run
the PREPRMAB command wich integrate RM into PNV and optionally install
Routermanager/Autobahn traps, Router/bridge/Switch/Device traps and also
Wellfleet traps. Afterwards you can customize PNV so, that on a double click
the boxmap (for example) of RM automaticly starts.

When are this features implemented within the ClearVisn package ?

3657.4Prices about Router ManagerMQOOA::mqsp15.mqs.dec.com::F_MONETTENetwork Consultant - MontrealFri Jul 05 1996 14:4113
Is the price of Clearvisn Router manager (4995 $) included an unlimited
numbers of routers or there is a limited number ? (StonyBrook's price are
based on numbers of routers managed with specific personality modules Cisco,
3Com,wellfleet.etc)

And again when the Clearvisn Router manager software integraded with netview
will be available ?

Thank,

Francois
