3587.0. "when ClearVISN on UNIX?" by LEMAN::JRS (John SHADE - 'Attila the Nun') Tue Jun 04 1996 09:41

I couldn't find a simple text file in NAC::NIPG:[CLEARVSN...] giving dates
for when ClearVISN components are expected to be available on various
platforms.

In particular, I'd like to know when ClearVISN will be available on Digital
UNIX. This is important to a customer who currently manages his Chipcom
components using Polycentre NetView on UNIX. He's prepared to change the active
components in his network, but not the management platform...

There's a lot of marketing hype about being able to launch ClearVISN from an
NMS such as NetView, and it would be nice to have some facts. Is there a
document anywhere that documents the hows and whys? For example, what tasks
would the NMS do, and how would one integrate data from the ClearVISN
applications?

This might also be a good time to re-open the age-old debate about whether we
need a separate conference for ClearVISN software? My personal opinion is that
HUB_MGNT is getting too big & unwieldy; with close to 3600 topics, it's about
time to either start a new version, or split it into several conferences (e.g.
CLEARVISN, HUB_MODULES, DECSWITCH400).

But before that rat-hole, I'd really appreciate some answers to the question of
ClearVISN on UNIX ;-)

Thanks,

-John

3587.1Lagging aboutSLINK::HOODYour bad news bearTue Jun 04 1996 18:3813
    John,

    Contact Jack NAC::Forrest for dates.

    I'm sure there was a better way to phrase that! (For a good time,
    call Jack. 226-...)

    The last official announcement I heard was that ports would lag
    by a quarter or two. Expect the first one to have a bigger lag
    than subsequent ones.

3587.2and the answer is...LEMAN::JRSJohn SHADE - 'Attila the Nun'Thu Jun 20 1996 04:0710
Just to close this thread, here is Jack's answer to my original
question:

"While the Wave 1 apps should be available on Digital UNIX by
December at the latest, the wave 2 apps will be delayed 3-6
months after Wave 2 release on NT. Since you need Wave 2
functionality for the VNswitch and ATMswitch, we are talking
about it being potentially a year away."

3587.3need new conference and need UNIX!RDMCS3::STUARTScott Stuart - NPB SE - 410.315.9954Fri Jun 21 1996 11:1124
    re: .0 - I agree that we need a separate conference for clearVISN,
    especially since it does more than just hubs.

    in re: to .2 FLAME ON - 3-6 months is alsways 6+, since December is 6
    moths from June (and that will probably slip). We are once again
    putting our heads in the sand and ignoring a large part of the market.
    Most large shops (especially Internet sites) use UNIX as thier NMS. While
    NT is fine and may be the platform of choice of the future, we are in
    no postion to dictate what platform user's must use. There is a lot of
    UNIX and each UNIX license represents a large amount of NPB hardware.

    I know we have been through this before, and yes, I have told all of
    this to product management. A 3 month delay for a UNIX port is ok,
    but the reality is 6+ months and by that time the older verison is
    obsolete as it does not manage the newer hardware.

    FLAME OFF

    b.t.w. the product set is great. It helps sales and makes us
    competitive with other vendors. Now we need to support the major
    existing platorms.
