3584.0. "HUBwatch for OpenVMS, x4.1" by SLINK::HOOD (Your bad news bear) Mon Jun 03 1996 14:05

I got back comments from the powers-that-be about HUBwatch for OpenVMS x4.1.
Here's the bullets. These things should not be a surprise to anyone.

 * OpenVMS is not a supported platform for any clearVISN products.
 * The last official supported version of HUBwatch on OpenVMS was V3.1
("Last" does not mean "most recent". It means "never again".)
 * There is a mostly working, but untested and unsupported version X4.1.10
available. The only way to get this is to directly contact product
management and plead your case (tears may help, but only if they're real).
This version will not go through system test ever. Not only is it
unsupported, but it is also unsupportable. If you weasel yourself a copy
and if it breaks, you're on your own, cowboy! We will officially deny that
version exists. We might even officially deny you exist! If you use it
to manage a switch and your house catches fire that afternoon or your dog
   dies, well, I warned you.
If I were you, I wouldn't even think about it.

Just wanted to clear up any confusion.

Who is going to soothe those "few" customers who have been waiting
patiently for the last 9 months for it to come out ... how come we
did'nt let this be known 6 months ago when we kept on hearing another
    month or so ...

Wouldn't it be cheaper for us to simply give these customers a PC and
then given them free lifetime MDDS & LPS so we can dispense with the
    OpenVMS product?

I think it is not as easy as to move to PC and Bill.

I have a few customers running HUBwatch/VMS and no one is running just HUBwatch. Nobody is
running only network management. They are running whole POLYCENTER set of products. Usually in
large datacenters - pure Digital environment.

I know, they are out of luck.
But it is easier to loose an account than get it back.

If we need to migrate all customers from VMS platform to something else, we should offer an
comprehensive solution.

    Hey, all:

It's important that you refer your OpenVMS questions to Jack NAC::Forrest,
    our product manager.

I'm not trying to squelch a discussion. It's just that he's the guy who
can give you answers and provide help for customers who are depending
    on OpenVMS.

News from the "we try - really!" department...
The predictability of clearVISN ports to non-PC platforms should be
greatly improved in the near future. We are putting more emphasis
in this area. (IBM AIX, HP-UX, Digital UNIX).
