Note 3541.0* Decswitch 900EE port broken state ? No replies
BELFST::BELCOO::HOUSTON "Peace at last" 30 lines 20-MAY-1996 05:43
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello.
I have installed a new Decswitch 900EE in a DH900.
I eventually figured out that I needed to connect port 2 to the thinwire
B/P as this does not happen by default. So far so good.
This DH900 is the connection between the Digital and GKN LAN's in our
office. It is my plan to isolate the two LAN's using the Decswitch with
some filtering.
The Digital LAN currently connects to the hub on a thinwire repeater.
When I try this Digital LAN connection through a TWISTER (thin to TP
converter) and onto any of the DECswitch TP ports the respective port
LED's do not leave the broken state. They do not register any activity
at all.
The same thinwire ( through twister config ) connected to a TP repeater
on the same HUB works OK.
Further more when a TP cable is connected from the TP repeater above to a
TP port on the DECswitch 900 the respective TP LED's on the DECswitch
register activity.
I cannot understand why the Digital LAN cannot connect directly to the
DECswitch 900 TP port but works fine on a TP repeater.
Any ideas ?

3541.2 | Sounds like incorrect number of crossovers.... | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | Don't use time/words carelessly | Mon May 20 1996 11:46 | 9 |
| The DECswitch 900EE does not have an internal crossover on it
twisted pair ports. The repeater does have internal crossover.
So it sounds like you are describing a situation where the
incorrect number of crossovers is occuring when connecting the
"twister" to the DECswitch900EE UTP ports. What is the make/brand
of this thinwire to TP converter? What UTP cable are you using
in your connection (BNXXX)?

3541.3 | TP cross over problem ? | BELFST::BELCOO::HOUSTON | Peace at last | Mon May 20 1996 13:09 | 15 |
| Hello.
The Thinwire to TP converter is a CentreCOM MR122T by Allied Telesis.
I have tried BN25g and BN24g cables both of which failed to the Decswitch.
There is however a switch on the CentreCOM TP port for MDI / MDIX. This
might be that cross over factor you are talking about.
I will try again with that switch in the other position as soon as
possible.
Many thanks
Colin

3541.4 | Problem re-created and solved get switch in proper position | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | Don't use time/words carelessly | Wed May 29 1996 11:43 | 13 |
| <-----RE: .3
Well I discovered quite by accident that we had a few of these
in our lab.
When I connected one of these puppies to a utp port on a DECswitch900ef
using a BN25G straight-thru cable the link came right up. The
MDI/MDIX switch was in the MDIX position at the time. Using a
BN24F crossover cable and the MDI/MDIX switch in the MDI position
the link will also come up. So it's simply a matter of getting that
switch in the right position depending on which cable you're using.
There is a little user manual which should have come with it that
also explains this feature.
