3538.1 | Full RMON applies to DECswitch900 EE/EF/FO | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | Don't use time/words carelessly | Fri May 17 1996 18:04 | 5 |
| Mark, the full RMON upgrade only applies to the 2 DECswitch products
EE/EF, *and* btw also applies to the DECSwitch900FO just recently
announced.

Bob,
There's something seriously wrong then. According to a document
posted on the external WWW page, the DECswitch 900EF gets the
4 + 9 upgrade in May 1996 and the DECswitch 900TX, 900FO and
PEswitch 900TX get the same upgrade in August 1996.
This is also counter to what we were told at the last SE Forum.

3538.3 | Some clarification... | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | Don't use time/words carelessly | Mon May 20 1996 11:24 | 16 |
| Hi Ted, first, what's a DECswitch900TX. :-) I know what a PEswitch900TX
is.
Now on to the RMON stuff. What I think I said was that the RMON upgrade
applies, but didn't say when, nor did I imply what was free and what
would have to be paid for. The 4 basic groups are free (whenever
that is available). The 9 group upgrade is something that must be
purchased (also whenever it becomes available). On the PEswitch, when
I asked one of the developers, he said that the plug had been pulled on
the full RMON for the PEswitch, but apparently not on the 4 basic groups.
So what I meant by "applies" in answering Marks question is what I had
come to understand the 9 group RMON would be applied (at some point in
time), not that it was available now.
Can you give me the web pointer that is posted with the infomation you
are referring to, so I can take a peek at it?

Bob,
I have a general issue on this "pull the plug" on the 9 group RMON.
It would be really helpful if this kind of info was given to the field
because we were told unequivocaly that all switches would support ALL 9
groups. I've been selling this to customers since then.
I meant to say DECswitch 900EE, 900FO & PEswitch 900TX.
I don't have the URL, but it has to be www.networks.digital.com where
the page you are looking for is titled "Virtual LANs and RMON
Firmware for DEChub 900 Switches". It is dated April 5, 1996, abut 5
weeks ago. Did the plug get pulled since then?

3538.5 | Discussion taken off line.... | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | Don't use time/words carelessly | Tue May 21 1996 11:17 | 7 |
| I looked at the fact sheet on the npb web page dealing with vlan
and rmon upgrades, and there is no specific mention of which
switches can be upgraded to the full rmon (9 group) and which ones
cannot.
I'll take this off-line with you.

| Furthermore, the "plug was pulled" not for technical reasons, but for
marketing/political reasons.
The argument goes that if we put full RMON is the PEswitch 900TX (aka PE 200)
then we'll be pressured to add it to the PE 2000 - and we're not prepared to
add it to the PE 2000 any time soon. Having a cheaper, lower-end product
(PE 200) which has additional capabilities over the high-end product (PE 2000)
is bad.
Per usual, if you question this decision please contact product management.

| re: .6
The PE 2000 serioes will replace not only the PEswitch, but also ALL
DECswitch 900 variations. SO we will still have an environment where
older products have more capability than new products (if Full RMON is
not supported on the PE 2000 models).

Mark
