What would cause a bridge port on a decbridge900mx (its running 1.5
switch code) to drop into a listening state for several minutes then
go back to forwarding. They have never seen it in broken state, always
in listening then back to forwarding. I have asked the customer to dump
the errorlog and to put a sniffer on the port, looking for 802.1d STP
messages. I also asked him to keep a eye on the bad hello count on
the port. We have tried using both AUI ports on the switch, the problem
follows the AUI connection. Also moved it to a different cable and tap.
He has just added a new tap to the backbone, so we can rule out
physical connection problems. The only thing I can think of is a burst
of bad hello's that keep up for a few minutes. Any ideas????
Thanks in advance for any help

So on power up, you're saying that the port/s in question appear
to go into the listening/preforwarding state, then to forwarding,
and then some time later the port drops into the listening state
for no explainable reason?
What's on the other end of the AUI cable that you are using to
connect to either of the 2 DECbridge ports? A MAU (what kind?),
repeater, DELNI? What kind of coax media is it (thickwire, or
thinwire)? If the bridge port (any of them) are inactive (IE: no
active LAN cable attached to the port), for greater than 2-5
minutes the port should go into the broken state. The customer
should see this (if they have HUBwatch), by looking at the switch
port info window or the switch summary window.

| 3520.2 | never goes broken | CSC32::R_STEWART | Rich Stewart - CSC/CS | Wed May 15 1996 02:17 | 11 |
Hi Bob,
Sorry it took me a few days to get back to you. When the switch is
powered up it does the normal listen/perforward then forwarding, but
intermittently to drops to listening (viewed from hubwatch). The AUI
cable (using ether AUI port on the switch) goes to a standard thickwire
tap. The switch never goes broken it sits in listening for several
minutes then goes back to forwarding?

Hi Rich,
Is your DECswitch900 always giving the same priority/address in
the Spanning Tree Info box for the Root bridge or does it change ?
