3503.1 | you can have 3 ip servers | NETCAD::MILLBRANDT | answer mam | Thu May 02 1996 11:29 | 13 |
| Hi Ed -
The customer can configure up to three seperate hub modules to
be IP servers in DH900 V4.0 and above. Both his DECswitch and
PORTswitch can be servers, even another module if desired.
The limitation to 3 is based on memory constraints. (If anyone
has customers who find this insufficient, let me know.)
The slot number is needed by the MAM in order for the MAM to tell
the IP server to accept traffic for that address and pass it
to the MAM.

| Well, Unfortunatly, the MAM doesn't have a MAC address. So it needs a DEChub
module to proxy for it. To do this you need to use IP Services on one of the hub
modules. No way around it that I know of.

| A key feature of the DEChub 900 is that it is the *STUPIDEST* hub in
the industry! (honest!) It doesn't know about Ethernet, FDDI,
Token-Thing, etc. The *INTELLIGENCE* is all on the modules. This
means that the backplane simply provides a passive interconnect. (I
realize that this is poetic technical license vis-a-vis the Token-Ring
and Thinwire channels...but bear with me...)
This is a great FEATURE in that the customer can buy a hub that is not
bound by network technology - we can implement ATM, Fast Ethernet,
Gigabit Ethernet, ect. and NOT have to upgrade the hub.
So - since the hub manager does NOT know about network technology (per
se) it utilizes a module to actually provide the physical network
connect - keeping it TECHNOLOGOY INDEPENDENT to WHATEVER technology
your customer decides to implement - Ethernet, FDDI, Token Thing etc.
U c?
I use it as a FEATURE to sell the flexibility of the interconnect to
management. Go ahead, mr and mrs customer - buy whatever LAN
technolgoy that you want to and the hub manager will use it to talk out
over - we don't restrict you at all.

3503.4 | A couple more questions... | RTP4ME::GALLAGHER | Put me in coach! | Thu May 02 1996 12:54 | 19 |
| Thanks for the quick response.
It wasn't readily apparent that a multiple slot assignment was even
possible, but it's great info to know...and we tried it...it works.
But I have just a couple more questions/concerns:
We assigned the second inbound IP address to slot 8, and showing the
current settings indicates that the first and primary slot (slot 6)
was active while the second slot (slot 8) was not configured. Could
you explain what we have to do to make slot 8 active as well? Or
is it dynamic relative to the current inbound connection?
Nonetheless, "not configured" doesn't sound like a "good" state for
the second slot configuration...but, hey, waddoino?!?!?!
Also, I'm assuming from your response in .1 that the memory entry in
the MAM requires a different IP address for each relative slot.
Therefore you have to use up to 3 IP addresses if you want to
define up to 3 inbound IP connections, right?
Thanks,
Ed

The steps you performed for the second IP server should have been
sufficient to get the hub to configure it, and if successful, the
status would say "Active". That it says Not Configured means the
hub was not successful in telling the module to serve the address.
Possible problems:
- Check the Error Log for a "Duplicate Address" message - it would
indicate that the address you entered was already in use elsewhere
in the module, or in use as another IP services address.
- Check the DEChub 900 MultiSwitch Hub Owner's module for a list
of modules that support IP Services. It also contains complete
instructions for configuring IP Services, including pretty
pictures.
Don't be surprised if the Not Configured message turns to
Not Active after you reset the module or the hub. Not Configured
only shows up after you have just entered the info.

Those of us on the MAM team would like to think this is not the case.
We spend all our days trying to teach this old dog new tricks.
For future reference, we would prefer the term "datalink challenged".
