3482.0. "Cabletron MMAC+ FDDI switching" by MXOC00::CSILVA (Carlos@MXO 7296514 Free but focused) Mon Apr 22 1996 22:27

    Crossposted in GIGAswitch
    		   and Hub Management/DEChubs conferences

    I know is very difficult to have a tool like the "Competitive
    Selling Guide" up to the last shout of the competition.

    But, is important for me to know now I any of you have info
    of availability of Switched FDDI ports for the Cabletron MMAC+.

    One customer claims that even with less backplane bandwith,
    and with the disavantadges of having a bus instead of a
    cross-bar switch, the MMAC+ is capable to provide up to
    28 DAS switched FDDI ports and a functionality similar
    to hunt groups!, of course in a box that is also hub, that can
    integrate Ethernets, routers, terminal servers, etc...

    Problem for us is that our first argument, before the Cabletron
    approach, was to remark that the GIGAswitch is not a hub,
    but a High Performance Backbone like our 900MS, but with
    statements like the ones in the previous paragraphs our
    arguments get a little bit weak.

    Is it true that Cabletron has a box now, capable of doing what
    our 900MS and the GIGAswitch can do together?. The papers I found
    are from November 95 and mention future FDDI switched
    capabilities in the MMAC+, taking advantage of its
    third bus (the one for cell switching).

    Any help welcome, I will apreciate facts, since the customer
    will take a decition this week and I have used every argument
    we have against them (we avoid an already made purchase
    order for Cabletron)

3482.1Gigaswitch scales betterPTOJJD::DANZAKPittsburgher Tue Apr 23 1996 09:128
    I believe that although Cabletron will state that "their bus is x
    Gigabits/second" etc., it would not really be possible for it to do the
    2.8 Gb/second (if 28 ports all transmit at once). THe key point is
    that the Cabletron *DOES NOT SCALE* because of the LACK of the crossbar
    matrix. It also *DOES NOT DO* full duplex. I think that the latest
    infosheets on the Gigaswitch also point out (from 3rd parties) that the
    Gigaswitch is the CLEAR winner. (Post a FAX number and I'll try to FAX
    it when I go by the office...) j
