3469.0. "DECbridge900ef crashes with netware" by COLA1::COLNWS::STICHTERNATH () Wed Apr 17 1996 08:01

Hi together,

i have a customer who have problems to connect a Novell System via
twisted-pair-concentrator ( cddi ) --> 900ef  --> 900cp with his novell-server.
He boot his system. after executing the startup-files the system connects to
the novell server. so far all seemed to work fine. when he starts some action
on the server e.g. dir command, or type xxx it works fine untill he deals with
small files. if he deals with files with sizes between 1.2 - 2.0 kbytes and
bigger he gets performance-problems, that means the display hangs.
while watching the bridge we noticed that the bridge started to reset. this
happened several times in short distances ( 5 to 10 minutes ).
Because up to now there is no other station in the fddi configuration, we had
no chance to check out if the pc is causing the trouble. when we disconnected
the pc the bridge works normal.
first of all i swapped the brigdge. the new bridge comes up with the same
problem. attached you find the revisions of the installed components and an
error-dump.

is there anyone out there who can help me ??

thanks in advance

volker

    Any chance that you're customer is setting SNAP protocol filters on the
    DEFBA?

3469.2why should this help ?COLA1::COLNWS::STICHTERNATHMon Apr 22 1996 07:245
    Hi Bill
    i think it will be no problem to set snap protocol filters, but why
    should this solve the problem. Can you give me a brief explanation.

    regards Volker
3469.3NPSS::WADENetwork Systems SupportMon Apr 22 1996 11:489
    NO! I'm asking if the customer has set any SNAP protocol filters on
    the DEFBA. I'm not suggesting that they do this.

    Please ask the customer if they have set any protocol filters.
    And, confirm that they are running V1.5.2.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

    there are no filters set on the DEFBA and the current version is
    V1.5.2. we played with some other things. we plugged in a second DEFBA
    in the backplane. the first DEFBA only provides ethernet bridging. on
    the second DEFBA we switch FDDI to ETHERNET in the earlier described
    way. the Novell PC on FDDI connected to a server and after doing some
    type and dir operations the DEFBA starts to reset the same way as
    described earlier. the first DEFBA which is only switching the ethernet
    operates normal.
    do you have any idea what to focus if i go to the customer with a
    FDDI-Analyzer ?

    The quickest way for me to reproduce this in my lab is for your to -

    	- capture an FDDI trace just prior to the crash using a W&G FDDI
    	  protocol analyzer

    	- copy the trace to a floppy and place it on the netcork so I can
    	  copy it over

    then I can load it onto my W&G and play it back against a DEFBA in my
    lab.

    hi
    i try to make an appointment for the 2. may 96. then i'll try to make a
    trace. i'll then forward it to you.

    I visit the customer today. He had to return the tp-fddi adater which
    was built in the pc all the time we tested arround. so we built in a
    DEFPA-UA in his PC. We had no more problems. The configuration is
    running in the same configuration as described. So we sugest that the
    problem was the tp-adapter.
