3435.0. "Hubwatch-Win on NT-Alpha: experience, problems" by MFRNW1::SCHUSTER (Karl Schuster @RTO OMS Munich Germany) Wed Apr 10 1996 08:45

I know that it is not supported, but the customer has Netview on NT-ALPHA and
would like to have Hubwatch-Win (V4.1.1) running on NT-Alpha.

My experience::

1. install.exe does not run. I copied the hubwatch directory from a Win3.11
   System to the NT-System

2. environment variable WSAVERS=1.1 in AUTOEXEC.BAT must be set

3. I can start Hubwatch, and open a HUB900, but .....

I encountered the following problems:
-------------------------------------

1. Double click on a 900EF (sometimes) gets the error: "Empty SNMP varlist"

2. Start LAN-Interconnect (mostly) gets the error: "View data is not
   available, no further information provided"

3. LED status displays are (sometimes) incomplete

4. LAN-Interconnect -> config : buttons remain greyed out

Currently we have an additional UNIX Hubwatch System. It works very well
with the same HUBs.

I have the impression, that there are HUBwatch network timeout or resource
problems on NT.

Are there possibilities to adjust TCPIP/UDP parameters in NT ( UDP-timeout,
UDP maxsockets, ...)

Perhaps someone has more experience.

Otherwise I must say: HUBwatch for Windows is not for practical use on a
NT-Alpha system.

Regards,
Karl

    You didn't mention what firmware the the hub and 900EF had. You should
    run the latest firmware when running the latest hubwatch.

    I'll let Tom answer about running on windows NT.

    All modules have the latest firmware !

    I mentioned in .0 that HUBwatch for Digital UNIX works very well in the
    same environment. Until now we did the whole configuration from the
    UNIX system: 1 Gigaswitch, 25 HUB900, 30 Stackables

    Karl,

    Intel binaries cannot be run on Alpha systems. One possible suggestion
    would be to use FX!32, but even there, you need a 32-bit binary
    executable.

    Version 5 of HUBwatch (aka MultiChassis Manager) supports Windows/NT on
    Intel, and a port to Windows/NT on Alpha is definitely planned.

    So, for the short-term, you're out of luck I'm afraid.

3435.4WNT - ALPHA soon?CSC32::HOEPNERA closed mouth gathers no feetTue Jul 02 1996 16:2115

    I realize this was written in April. Is there an update on
    Hubwatch (Clearvision) on WNT -ALPHA.

    I have a hard time justifying telling our customer who just bought a
    whole farm of 4100's to run WNT that they need an INTEL or a UNIX
    box to manage their hub.

    Where does this need for a NT Alpha kit need to be escalated?

    THanks.

3435.6Runs under FX!32...MBSVAX::SLOANFri Jul 12 1996 21:144
    FWIW clearVISN will run on Alpha under FX!32. I have it running on
    an AlphaStation 500 and and Alpha 2100 4/200.

Anyone managed to get the ClearVISN stuff running with NT V4.0 Beta2?
I get the error "setup requires a different version of windows". The
same thing happens if I try installing under FX!32 (I've got sn Alphastation).

    I have running on an Alpha XL 266 under FX!32 b0078b. You need to run
    setup from a command windows after setting processor_architecture=x86,
    and it should install OK.

3435.9Install works from the command window; not by double-clicking in explorerLEMAN::JRSJohn SHADE - 'Attila the Nun'Wed Jul 17 1996 04:388
RE: .-1

Thanks for the top-tip. Running setup from the command window worked fine (no need
to specify architecture type). So, there's a difference between launching setup by
clicking on the file in explorer (doesn't work - complains about the version of
windows), and launching it by running it in the command window (which does work).
