3359.0. "Hubwatch For Windows Agents File" by BEEZER::ELCOCKW () Wed Mar 13 1996 05:54

Hello,

I have a customer using Hubwatch for Windows v4.1.1 on Windows 3.11. He is having difficulty in making
modifications to the agents file. The customer is able to make modifications on screen, but as soon as he attempts
to accept these modifications and save them to the hw_agents.dat file, he gets an error to the effect that
Hubwatch is unable to write to the agents file.

However, Hubwatch can write to the file as is shown by the fact that when the file is examined after this error
message, it is completely empty of agents. Any agents which were in the file have been removed.

This problem seems to be intermittent and does not seem to be associated with invalid agent names.

The customer has tried deleting the file and getting Hubwatch to recreate it and manually adding agent entries
into the file in a text editor, but this has not corrected the problem.

Does anyone know of any known problems with this version of Hubwatch with regard to agent names?

I would be grateful for any assistance which anyone could offer.

What appear in the box named Agent File in the "Community Table" window that you
get when you choose the option "Manage Table" under "Community"? Is it the
correct file?
I think that this value is set using the DOS environment variable
"HUBWATCH_LIBRARY".

Dennis,

Many thanks for your suggestion. The cust. has got the HUBWATCH_LIBRARY setting in his autoexec.bat file which
points to the correct directory.

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

RE: .2

After re-reading .0, you mentioned that you get the "write error"
intermittently. Then it does works sometimes and an entry is entered in the file
"HW_AGENT.DAT". Correct?
Where is that file being stored? Local disk drive or Network drive?
File, HW_AGENT.DAT read only? (check with attrib hw_agent.dat)

Is the customer trying to use agent names with spaces in it, because
    I don't think this works.

e.g. DECserver90 as an agent name is OK, but if you try DECserver 90, you
    get an error message.

Re .3:-
The agents file is stored on a local drive. I will check the attributes of the file, but why would they
change to read-only?

Re .4:-
A space in the agent name does muck things up, but the intermittent nature of the problem is not
consistant with the customer making this mistake i.e it happens even when he enters a valid name.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Are there any more out there?
