3355.0. "DECrepeater 900FP configuration" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Tue Mar 12 1996 08:15
I have posted the following diagram of a DEChub 900 requesting someone
to do a sanity check, mainly because of my doubts about the DECrepeater 900FP
port switch and the customer is facing a response time problem, which he feels
may be due to misconfiguration of the DEChub 900.
The actual problem symptom is posted in note 3351 (slow response)
of this conference.
Even if there is no misconfiguration is there a better configuration.
Notes:
------
1)There are 3 power supplies in this hub (the earlier type).
2)Except for the DR900FP (which is at F/w rev 1.1) all other modules
have the latest F/W in them. DR900FP was deliberatley not upgraded because
I was warned of a possible problem in F/W rev 2.0 under some configurations.
3)Mac PCs and DOS pcs are connected to the DR90TS in slots 1,2,3.
AppleTalk MAC servers are also connected via DR90TS in slots 1,2,3.
4)DBR90T1 goes to the head-office LAN. This WAN likely is very very
rarely used.
5) 3 x Alphaserver 1000 4/200 with DEFEA-UTP FDDI cards in each
connect to M1, M2, M3 ports of the UTP DECconcentrator 900MX. These three
systems run VMS ver 6.2 and UCX (do not know version). These systems are VMS
Pathworks servers for about 240 PCs using Netbui and 40 PCs using TCP/IP
stack. These are all Digital PCs (various types) with Digital Ethernet Cards
(various types) using their UTP Ethernet ports. They connect to DR90TS in
remote DEChub 90s.
6)DECswitch 900EE in slot 6 is not at all used. Don't know why it is
there.
7)Ports 1 to 8 of the DR900FP are used and ports 9 to 12 are unused.
Port 1 goes to a remote 16 slot DEChub 90 in another building (BLDG 1) and
enters that DEChub via a DECbridge90FL. Same with port 2 and it goes to
BLDG 2's 16 slot DEChub 90 and enters that DEChub 90 via a DECbridge 90FL.
same with ports 3 to 8. All these remote DEChub 90 units have DR90TS x 8 or
12 and DECserver 90M and some have a DECagent 90 as well. All the terminals and
PCs in the various buildings communicate with the 3 x Alphaservers mentiond
above.
8)The thinwire stubs of the 3 x DR90TS and the DR900FP are not
connected as shown below. The thinwire of the DR900FP is grouped with ports
11 and 12, but 7 is not connected to the blue thinwire line.

Is the above configuration valid ? Also please explain, what we are
doing in the port switch screen where we associate thinwire with a group. For
eg. if we associate thinwire of the port switch DR900FP with ports 11 and 12,
does that mean all data seen on port 11 or 12 will be repeated on to thinwire
and all data seen on thinwire will be repeated on ports 11 and 12, IF stub 7
is pulled down and connected to the blue wire. What if stub 7 is not connected
to the thinwire blue wire ? What is this know bug with ver 2.0 F/W. I do not
understand the explanation that was given to me about this bug.

Is the above configuration valid ?
>>Yes.
Also please explain, what we are doing in the port switch screen where we
associate thinwire with a group?
>>Is this amongst consenting adults? 8^)
For eg. if we associate thinwire of the port switch DR900FP with ports 11 and
12, does that mean all data seen on port 11 or 12 will be repeated on to
thinwire and all data seen on thinwire will be repeated on ports 11 and 12,
if stub 7 is pulled down and connected to the blue wire?
>>Yes.
What if stub 7 is not connected to the thinwire blue wire?
>>Without the bug, there will not be any traffic onto or off of the thinwire.
>>With the bug then eventhough the thinwire is shown disconnected, it really is
>> connected.

PS. Purpose of the 900EE was probably to help get closer to making
budget. 8^)
