3322.0. "Problems with stations on repeater 900TM" by KERNEL::ELCOCKW () Tue Mar 05 1996 05:51
Hello,
I have a customer who is experiencing difficulty with version 4.1.1 of
Hubwatch for Windows running on Windows 3.11. When he looks at the
repeater port summary window (for a repeater 900TM) and "clicks" on the
'stations' button at the bottom of the screen, he is only getting the
MAC address of the PC which is attached to that port.
I have tried to reproduce this problem on two platforms in the CSC, a
Windows 3.11 PC and a Digital Unix (v3.3) workstation, both running
version 4.1.1 of Hubwatch. The device which I am using to reproduce the
problem is a Decserver 700 (which has an IP address defined on it)
connected to a repeater 900TM. On the PC, I am experiencing the same
problem as the customer, but on the workstation, I am getting the IP
address back from the device. In both cases, the IP address of the
device is in the ARP cache, and in addition, it is registered in the
hosts database.
Does anyone know of a bug in the PC implementation of hubwatch which
prevents it from gaining access to the IP address of a device connected
to the repeater, or is there something obvious which I have overlooked?
I would be very grateful for any light which anyone could shed on this
problem.

Will,
One possible root of the problem is that the arp utility is
not runnable via the command arp. See if the path is defined
properly to allow this.

| Bob,
Thanks for your response. I have just checked re: the path situation and the arp.exe file lies in a windows
directory which is pointed to in the path command in autoexec.bat. This should mean that it is accessable from any
directory on the hard disk, so I don't think that the path is the problem.
Do you have any further suggestions?
Many thanks,
Will

Wil,
Just for a sanity check you might want to pull up an MD-DOS window
and make sure that the command "arp -a" works.

Will,
I have just found out that the MAC to IP translation was not
implemented for the [Stations] Button in HUBWatch for Windows
V4.1. Sorry for the detour with the ARP questions.
