I am installing a DECHUB 900 MultiSwitch with four DECconcentrator 900MX. This is a standalone HUB which will have 6 AXP VMS machines attatched. We need to have a primary and a secondary FDDI ring on this setup. Being illiterate when it comes to the new network equipment I would appreciate a pointer or two on how to setup the two rings. I have gone through this notes file and there is a lot of information presented and I'm sure my answer is in there, but I can't understand half of what I am reading. Thanks Bruce

You could start with the FDDI configuration guide in note # 2340. Not sure what you mean by primary and secondary. Perhaps you mean dual homing. In that case you'd connect all the concentrators together in a dual ring in the hub backplane with Hubwatch, then connect each port of the DAS on the workstations to a different concentrator, thus gaurding against a fault in any one concentrator or cable. -Mike

I agree with Michael in .1, but to really make it fault tolerant, put dual controllers in the AXP machines. Even with FDDI dual homing and N+1 power in the DEChub, the NIC card is still a single point of failure, regardless of whether it's a DAS card. DAS simply provides path redundancy, but two controllers along with items mentioned in .1 provide total redundancy.

It sounds as the HUBwatch software is required to set up the "dual" rings. I copied down the notes entry mentioned and will go through it before I try anything else. As for the second card .. it'd be nice, but we have gone almost two years without a "glitch" with the card in there so it'd be tough to sell them a second card. Bruce |
