3242.0. "Questions about managing DECswitch900 and Concentrator FDDI Connections" by PRIVAT::OTTO (...this is the last message You will ever hear...) Tue Feb 06 1996 03:16

Hello,

as usual I have a question regarding Hubwatch and managing DECswitch900EF
and DECconcentrator900MX

A customer has two HUB900 and in each of them he has a DECswitch900EF.
The switches are connected to each other via external FDDI Connections.
The Firmware on all the components is: Switch 1.5.2 Concen. 3.0.1 Hub 4.1.0

Now he wanted to integrate a Concentrator900 into his FDDI Ring .
To acomplish this he managed Port B of the Bridge to the Backplane and
from the Concentrator he managed Port A to the Backplane.
He then created a FDDI ring internal to the Hub, and connected
the Switch and the Concentrator via an IMB.
(acording to the Manual Hubwatch Use Page 6-13 ).

He changed the external Connections accordingly.

After doing all of this, he noticed that the LED for FDDI on the Switch
started flashing orange and on the Concentrator the LED started flashing
green.

He expected that all the LED's would light green, so he asks where is the
error or what did he do wrong ?
Unforunately he did not look at the port states (after all the LED should
represent the truth)

Thanks

The led on the DECswitch 900EF that you are referring to as flashing
yellow I will presume to be the FDDI port Network Activity LED with
    the embossed symbol -->.
This is normal for a port which has been re-directed to the HUB
backplane. This led behavior is well documented in the DECswitch
900EF installation guide, hopefully shipped with the DECswitch
that your customer received. Suggest to your customer that they
read pages 56-57 titled LED Descriptions. The Network Activity
LED will flicker green with front port connectivity traffic, and
flicker yellow with backplane port connectivity traffic.

... and the concentrator port LED flashing green tells you which ring port
is enabled out the front, top one flashes when its an A port and the
bottom one flashes when it is a B port.
