3216.0. "2 power connectors in Stacking Unit" by TKOV51::NAKANO (Koichi Nakano/NPB/Japan) Tue Jan 30 1996 05:25

My customer asked me a strange question, and I couldn't give appropriate
answer. Question is ...

"Inside the Digital MultiStack System Stacking Unit, its circuit board has
two power connectors. One is used but another is not used. Why are two
connectors on the circuit board? "

I checked it in the office, his mention is true. Extracting the circuit board
from the Stacking Unit, two connectors are on. From outside we can see one
power connector. We normally cannot see another connector blocked by plastic
cover.

Please let me know why there are two power connectors?

Thanks in advance.

Tell the customer to mind their own business... and don't be ripping
the circuit boards out of our products!

The real answer is that over the years, there have been two ways to
wire power connectors; one for a 5V-only brick and another for a 5/12V
brick. During development of the rear cover, there was a time we
thought we would support both wirings. This is why both connectors
appear on the board. We decided to minimize confusion by only
supporting the 5/12V brick (pluggin in the 5V-only brick will not harm
anything... it just won't work). The physical connector for the
5V-only brick has been left on the design because the ECO to remove it
would cost more than quite a lot of connectors.

I'll tell him the reason and strongly recommend him to do so. :-)

Thank you.

I spoke a little too soon.

Actually, the units mentioned in the base note were prototypes supplied
for evaluation purposes. Production units ship with only the 5/12V
power connector installed on the circuit board.
