| In general, the hardware addresss of the MAM is that of the device that is
providing IP connectivity for the MAM. I.E. if you are connecting to
the OBM port with a DECserver using SLIP, the MAM's hardware address is
the same as the DECserver.
If you're going in-band using IP services, it is the hardware address
of the module's port that you are connecting to; if using a repeater
for IP services, the repeater's hardware address is the one to use for
the MAM.
The reason I'm being vague is because I'm not sure what you mean a
"reload" of the MAM. If you mean a primitive load due to the MAM
firmware being corrupt, go with the first paragraph since you must use
the OBM port. Use hardware address of the DECserver and the IP address
of the DECserver port that is connected to the MAM talking SLIP.

| Mike,
I have a hub that is toast....after an attempted upgrade it blew it's
cookies and now is requesting a reload via SLIP.
SO....I need to figure out how to reload it via SLIP etc.
ALso, how do I find out my hardware addrsess (i.e. of my PC's slip
port??)
HELP!!!!!

| Okay, so you're talking to the MAM via the OBM port from a serial line
on your PC. When the MAM is in this braindead state is sets the
OBM port to 9600 bps, so make sure the PC's SLIP stack is using that
speed with your serial port. Also make sure your SLIP stack is talking
SLIP not CSLIP (i.e. turn off Van Jacobson header compression).
In this case I don't think you need to know the hardware address (since
you don't have one, you don't have any network hardware).
In Netrider loader, choose "config->files...", the MAM will request the
image name "MAM" so set the "request file name" to MAM and the "local
file name" should be DMHUB410.BIN or whatever. I don't know if you
specify the path with the filename, or where on your hard drive
netrider loader will look.... try some different places.
I don't have a PC with a SLIP stack to test with, so I haven't done
it myself. Maybe someone has done this direct from a PC and can chime
in here...

3207.6 | HOW do I do this with HUBWATCH/Firmware tools? | PTOJJD::DANZAK | Pittsburgher  | Tue Jan 30 1996 18:39 | 18 |
| Folks....
I need to know HOW TO USE the NETrider load that comes with HUBwatch to
do it!
Dotsie - I have NO UNIX system to do this with, i DO have my PC with
HUBWACH, firmware and all accoutriments.
SO...HELP!!!!!
I tried the SLIP startup hubwatch/ipstack/strtslip.bat but NETrider
loader (v1.1) did NOT indicate that it was seeing any load requests.
So....
HOW DO I DO THIS!!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!

| Yo Jon, there is a notes file where you might want to try and post
your question.....it's the netrider notes conference.

As usual, I hope this information leads you to a successful finding
of an answer to your questions.

| At a minimum, you need to edit the PWTCP.INI file and set the network
type = 2 (SLIP) then down in the [SLIP] section set the right COM port
and speed (9600) .... I dunno what else....

| Us firmware folks aren't much use on PCs, John.
(Except Mike.)
When you find out what to do, please post the
instructions, or mail them to me.
Thanks,

3207.10 | Instructions needed in docs tho too. | PTOJJD::DANZAK | Pittsburgher  | Wed Jan 31 1996 12:59 | 19 |
| Sigh,
I'll go do the NETrider thing in that conference. Fortunately I had a
'spare' hub (that I use for emergencies) but that's now toast because I
swapped that MAM with the customers to get it working.
HOWEVER....
As the HUB group ships HUBwatch and NETrider loader and hubs DO die in
the field - we should publish instructions as to how to recover. The
only way that this customer (a reseller) would have had to recover
would be to ship the unit back to Digital for complete replacement.
That doesn't seem cost effective....
Are we thinking of these 'recovery instructions' for the field?
Thanks

| Well, the system test group tried this and couldn't get it to work.
It would work if you had a TFTP client that could initiate a "put" but I
don't think NetRider loader was designed to do this. Plus like they
said in the netrider conference there could be some weirdness with
BOOTP over SLIP.
Good Luck

..a smilar reply posted to Jon's note in the NetRider conference..
From the notes I read here --
- the message on "dead" MAM is misleading at best ---
the message I see on mine is "Sending BOOTP request"
which of course it isn't as I understand it from
the notes here -- it's really just sitting there
waiting some somebody connected to the OBM port at 9.6 to
stuff somethng down its throat using an expected protocol
- I'm not aware of any way to initiate such a load from
the NetRider Loader V1.0 (aka the HUBwatch TFT Server)
or NetRider Loader V1.1
Given the requirement to have something that does a put, I've
reconciled myself to either:
- finding a TFTP client for Windows or Win 95 or NT
which can do a 'put' (preferred) -- Any ideas?
- transporting said hub to my office, configing a SLIP
port on my DECserver and using my ULTRIX system
(least desirable for any number of reasons...)

| I've used FTP's tftp software on a PC to 'put' a bin file to a MAM via
SLIP. It worked fine. MAM was happy. But you do need tftp & slip on
the PC.
This was a long (relatively speaking) time ago.

3207.14 | Set up DECserver will it work? | PTOJJD::DANZAK | Pittsburgher  | Mon Feb 05 1996 18:18 | 18 |
| Sheila,
My problem is that I only have what Digital would provide a customer
normally - that is HUbwatch and the firmware that comes with it.
It's not an easy thing for me to buy something else, and even less so
for a customer....
So I need a solution within the bounds of the products that we sell!
RE:DECserver...
HOW do I use the HUBloader to do it? I set up a DECserver 90M with
SLIp port permanently connected at 9600....can I do a put in some way
to it?
