A customer who is looking at purchasing a DEChub 900 (with PORTswitch 900FPs, DECrepeater 90TS and DECserver 90M) has specified that they must be capable of operating in an environment that has an EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) reading of 55 Gauss. This has really got me stumped. Can anyone explain what a Gauss is (and how much EMI it is) and whether 55 is OK??? Jeannie

3167.1 | Class 1 CE label? | SNOFS1::KHOOJEANNIE | Humpty Dumpty was pushed | Thu Jan 18 1996 18:52 | 8 |
I've found out something from the DEChub 900 System Spec on Immunity: "we meet requirements for full field Class 1 CE label on DEChub 900 and all new half-height and full-height modules", but what is full field Class 1 CE label? Any ideas? | |||||

Well a gauss is a unit of measure of flux density in the cgs electromagnetic system of unit measurement. In this case they're talking about magnetic field flux density. In the mks system of unit measurement the magnetic flux density is measured in webers/m. According to my physics book which for some reason is here at work, 1 weber/m=10,000 gauss. I can't speak for how strong 55 gauss in relative terms to things I do on a daily basis, like listen to my car radio, or watching TV with the radiation & magnetic fields generated by the focus yoke on a picture tube. So I can't answer the question on what 55 gauss means in terms of relative field strength. Maybe I can ask Boris Shusterman to post a note in here to give a quickee lesson on webers/m & gaussian emissions etc. I'll also make sure he explains "full field class 1 CE label" is too. Bob |
