I have a reseller who would like use some of our DEChub 900 Products to augment an old DEC network installation. The reseller is selling a DECHUB 900 Multiswitch DECswitch 900EE Portswitch 900CP (2) DECserver 900TM The reseller would like to do the following, but is being told by DEC support (1-800) that it will work but it is not a supported configuration. With the 900EE create (6) ethernets in backplane, create six different groups within the 900CP Portswitch menu ... connect those groups to the various ethernets in the backplane ... The only unstandard thing that the reseller would like to do is connect (3) 900CP Ports to three different DELNI via Port #9 with a (DECXM-AA AUI to THinwire MAU). Each DELNI has three DEMPRs connected to ports 1-3. Config would look like this 900CP POrt ---------DELNI Port #9 with DECXM-AA |1 |2 |3 D D D E E E M M M P P P R R R Is this a supported configuration ... I realize that we have 2 repeater hop ... if this is not a supported config ... could someone explain WHY ...

It is MOST LIKELY not a supported configuration, because of the possibility of misconfiguration in the DEChub 900 backplane. I assume that the 900CP is portswitching each ThinWire coming in to a separate port of the DECswitch 900EE. If it is not, then DEFINATELY NOT SUPPORTED. Forget the old repeater rules, and use the 5-4-3 rule. You can have only 5 segments, 4 repeaters, between the furthest nodes in a collision domain, and only 3 of those segments can be multinode (coax or hubs) tapped segments. your config is maxed-out at EACH port of the 900CP. So you need to bridge from the 900CP coax port to the next 900CP coax port. the only way to do this is through the 900EE, which I assume you have supplied expressly for this purpose. Remember to disable Heartbeat on coax mau at the DELNI. Or else it will surely fail. JR

Why is the customer leaving the DEMPRs on the DELNI? Why aren't you disconnecting the DEMPRs from the DELNI and hooking each one to a 900CP port?

Customer has (3) DELNIs like this each DELNI has 3-4 DEMPRs on them ... We have only three open ports on the 900CP ... I read reply # 1 ... if I am using the EE to switch the CP ports ... is this a supported configuration ... The answer is ??? |
