3043.0. "Digital NMS product comparison chart" by CRONIC::LEMONS (And we thank you for your support.) Thu Dec 07 1995 22:38

    Hi

I'm looking for a chart that compares the feature set of Digital's
network management products. I'm particularly interested in one that
shows which operating systems are supported by each product, and the
basic differences between them. For instance, I know the HUBwatch for
Windows release will support GIGAswitch; the other platforms won't.

    Does this exist?

    Thanks!

If you need comparaison of Digital NMS (Polycenter NETVIEW, ManageWORKS, DECmcc
or TeMIP) you have to ask in the appropriate notefiles NOTED::NETVIEW,
NOTED::NETVIEW-NT, NOTED::MWDEV, AZUR::MCC , TAEC::TEMIP.

If you need information on HUBWATCH, 'THE' NPB element manager then most of the
answers can be found on nac::nipg:[manage]

                DEChub CONFIGURATION for SNMP MANAGEABILITY
DEChub 900, DEChub ONE, DEChub 90

PHILOSOPHY: Digital believes that SNMP management should be an integral part of
each piece of hardware and not require a separate management module. A few
older modules such as DECbridge 90s and DECserver 90L/L+ will always require
a DECagent 90.

NOTES:
Any module will work in any slot in the DEChub 900MS

Most DEChub 90 modules only attach on channel 1 (ThinWire); the
DECrepeater 90TS and 90FS are exceptions - they can attach to the
ThinWire and to the one flex channel on the upper connector.

The DEChub 900 Hub Manager proxies for all DECrepeater 90s, except the
90TS and 90FS, which have integral SNMP agents, and thus do not need
  proxy agents.

The DECagent 90 and the DECbridge 90 must be in slot 7 or 8 if they are
in the DEChub 90. Only one DECbridge 90 or DECagent 90 is needed for
a set of daisy chained hubs (16 slot configuration).

DENMA-MA in-hub DECagent 90 $1,495
DENMA-xx standalone DECagent 90 $1,630
Discounts: E/U = N, OEM = G
xx = AA US/Canada/Japan; AD Denmark; AE UK; AI Italy; AK Switzerland; AT
Israel; AZ Australia; AX Central Europe; BJ India/South Africa.

 Configuration Module required for management
 --------------------------------------------------------------------
DEChub 900 with any module	IP Services module - any 900 Enet repeater
   other than | 900 switch, 900 FDDI, DECmau 900TH,
              v 90TS and FS repeaters
   /-----------------------\
DECmau 900TL and Requires DECmau 900TH in same hub
    DECrepeater 900SL,900FL,
      900TL

DECbridge 90/90FL and Requires DECagent 90 on same LAN; one
DECserver 90L/L+ in hub DECagent 90 can proxy for 16
or standalone communities (DEChub 90, daisy-chained
hub, or standalone) containing up to
				  48 modules
   \-----------------------/

DEChub ONE with any module	Full size 900 modules all have integral
SNMP Agents - no other module required

DEChub 90 with repeaters	One of: DECagent 90 or DECbridge 90/90FL
other than 90TS or 90FS in that same hub or daisy-chained hub
as bus master; if DECbridge is used,
then DECagent 90 required on same LAN

DECbridge 90/90FL and Requires DECagent 90 on same LAN; one
DECserver 90L/L+ in hub DECagent 90 can proxy for 16
or standalone communities (DEChub 90, daisy-chained
hub, or standalone) containing up to
				  48 modules

Standalone DECrepeater 90C, Cannot be managed
   90T/T+, 90FA, 90FL, 90T-16
   900TL, 900SL, 900FL,
   DECmau 900TL

Standalone not listed above	Has integral SNMP Agent - no other
				  module required

 DECpacketprobes require PROBEwatch for management

WANrouter 90's, MUXserver 90's and LATprint 90 are not manageable with
HUBwatch; use NCL/TSM. Can do limited WANrouter and MUXserver
management with generic SNMP MIB browser.

Futures:

The DECbridge 90/90FL bus master code is no longer being updated to
recognize or manage new modules. For example, it will neither
recognize, nor manage, the DECrepeater 90T-16. For this reason,
it is recommended that the DECbridge 90/90FL no longer be used
as a bus master in new hubs, or in hubs where new modules are
likely to be deployed. Use a DECagent 90 in each hub instead.
(DECagent 90 V3.0 firmware is required to proxy for DECrepeater
90T-16; DECrepeater 90T-16 does not have an integral SNMP agent)

In September new firmware for the DECrepeater 90TS/FS will allow
these repeaters to be a bus master in a DEChub 90. These modules can
then substitute for a DECagent 90 except when a DECbridge 90/90FL or
DECserver 90L/90L+ is present. The DECrepeater 90TS/FS will not
manage remote hubs which contain DECbridge 90/90FL bus masters.

When Stackables are introduced:
Possible stack masters (bus masters) will be the DECagent 90 V3.0,
  and DECrepeater 90TS/90FS.

Every HUBwatch 4.1 port (Windows, Digital Unix, OpenVMS, SunOS, HP-UX)
supports GIGAswitch/FDDI to exactly the same degree.

Ah! So does this mean that no HUBwatch platform is 'better' than
another? Note 2547.3 stated that the primary environment is Windows
    NT.

That's not what I said. GIGAswitch/FDDI is supported equally on all platforms.
