3035.0. "MultiStack AUI or Thinwire ?" by ZPOVC::CSNAQS () Wed Dec 06 1995 21:25

    Hi all,

    Sorry if it is a dumb question. As I am very new to Multistack System
    and would like to clarify some of my doubts.

    As I know there are two types of stacking unit where one has AUI
    port(DETAX) and the other (DETRX) don't.

    But what happen if have DETAX and I need to connect and stack the
    DECrepeaters,DECbridges,DECserver using the AUI cable instead of
    thinwire. As I know, the DETAX provided me with the AUI port which I
    can connect to the backbone of the network but how can I stack the
    rest? Do I use thinwire, UTP on the existing port of the DECrepeater?

    Thanks

	Thinwire for stringing all the units in the string.
	In fact when order as stackable units they come with a
	short piece of thinwire coax for the intermodule
	connection.

	If you wish, AUI through the DETAX to a backbone connection.

    -.1 is correct... the thinwire is _always_ used to connect the modules
    in the stack together.

    The AUI on the DETAX can be used for a backbone connection or any other
    purpose you like, but remember that it works ONLY with the DECrepeater
    90T-16.
3035.3ZPOVC::CSNAQSThu Dec 07 1995 21:119
    Sorry for my ignorance, as you have mentioned that DETAX works ONLY with
    DECrepeater 90T-16, then if I were to connect the AUI of the DETAX to my
    network backbone, what heppen if I need to stack two or more DECrepeater
    90T-16 ? Do I link them by using thinwire but I have heard from Digital
    that you can't simultaneously using both thinwire and AUI cable.

    Please advise.

    Thanks

         The information on not using the ThinWire and AUI simultaneously
    is applicable to the DECrepeater 90TS not the 90T-16. The 90T-16 was
    designed to support the AUI to the backbone and ThinWire to the stack
    at the same time.

3035.590T16 *AND* 90TS do it don't they?PTOJJD::DANZAKPittsburgher Sun Dec 10 1995 08:4422
    I thought that the 90-T16 *AND* the 90TS both supported AUI from the
    back connections? The 90TS has a current shipping stand-alone variant
    that has the AUI on the plastic cover.

    So, is it a fair statement to say both the 90TS and 90-T16 support the
    AUI stacking unit?

    One other thought - the only connects that matter are the MANAGEMENT
    BUS connects. As far as Ethernet connectivity - as long as you are on
    the LAN, it doesn't matter if it's via the 10-2 or AUI or front etc.

    i.e.

    -----Fiber-----AUI/Fiber/convert>90T16--
                                     90TS--|<---connect via front
                                     .x
                                     .x<--other modules daisy chained
                                          via thinwire
    (the above would do a cheaper fiber connect at the expense of two
    repeater ports...)

    >>  the AUI stacking unit?

    No, this is incorrect. It really is true that the DETAX AUI stacking
    rear cover is only supported with the 90T-16.

    While it is true that the 90TS has an available AUI rear cover, this
    rear cover is not part of the Multistack system. And no, the 90TS' AUI
    rear cover is not supported on the 90T-16.

    In summary, both the 90TS and the 90T-16 has its own AUI rear cover
    supported only for that module.

    Given that the AUI only works for the T-16, is it OK to use a DETAX with
    any other 90 module for power & management?
    (e.g. like any 900 module can use a DEChub ONE-MX)

    What happens with the AUI port in HUBwatch?

    Yes, it's OK to use the DETAX with any other 90 module for power and
    management.
3035.9No 90TS/AUI in DETAX?PTOJJD::DANZAKPittsburgher Mon Dec 18 1995 21:326
    You mean that if I use a 90TS in the DETAX with an AUI that the aui
    will not work????

    R u sure?

3035.10Haven't we discussed this before in here??NETCAD::HERTZBERGHistory: Love it or Leave it!Tue Dec 19 1995 09:364
    I'm sure it's not designed to work that way and is not supported.
    I am not sure whether or not it will appear to "work."
