| Luciano,
Drawing #1 is not possible, and never will be. There is no product that
supports two M ports on the backplane.
I am confused at your cost savings question, since the two drawings
show the same equipment and thus cost the same (barring cabling
differences).
It is possible to configure the DECswitch 900EF with an M port on the
backplane; this means you'll also configure the other port to be S out
the front. The 900EF cannot be configured to use the root primary LIGO
(which is A,B out the front and M out the back); only a concentrator
can do that.
Please read the FDDI configuration note #2340. It explains what is
possible. See "Example 3: Tree Connections To An External
Concentrator", and diagrams 13 to 16.

2952.2 | thanks, wrong drawns, sorry | MLNCSC::BARILARO | | Sat Nov 04 1995 05:11 | 38 |
| Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply, I'm sorry about the drawning, I copied
the wrong one.
The saving should be to avoid 2 FDDI modules for each HUB when
I install PEswitch900 and I've to connect to an external FDDI
not-wrapped ring.
The DRAWN 1 should be (and has you wrote is impossible):
DRAWN 1
FrontPanel HUB-1 HUB-2
.---------------------.
| .---------. |
| | | |
+---------+ +-A-----B-+ +-A-----B-+ +---------+
| PE900TX | | DE900EF | | DE900EF | | PE900TX |
+-S-------+ +------M--+ +--M------+ +-------S-+
| | | |
| | | |
+-----------------+ +------------------+
And DRAWN2 (that work) has to be:
FrontPanel HUB-1 HUB-2
+------------------------------------------------------------------+
| +-------+ |
| | | |
+-A-------+ +---------+ +-------B-+ +-A-------+ +---------++-------B-+
| DS900EF | | PE900TX | | DS900EF | | DS900EF | | PE900TX || DS900EF |

2952.3 | how many ports your modules have? | MXOC00::CSILVA | | Mon Nov 06 1995 11:27 | 9 |
|
In the first drawing you are using 3 FDDI ports (A,B,M), and the
modules you are using for that can support any LIGO type for
a 2 port module (that's a 900EF).
A 900MX on the other hand, have 8 ports, that means you can use
the 6 front connectors and two back plane ports.
The 900EF has only two ports for external/backplane connection.

2952.4 | Ethernet & FDDI, no 900MX | MLNCSC::BARILARO | | Mon Nov 06 1995 13:01 | 32 |
| Hi,
Trying to simplify the problem, probably I complicate it.
Guys, sorry for that.....
I try to explain better:
I've to connect our "future" Data Center HUB900 to our
building FDDI ring, the fibers has to enter in this HUB
and exit to reach another HUBs.
In the Data Center HUB900 I want to install some PORTswitch
900CP and 900TP ( so I need also some Ethernet backplane
channels, not only FDDI) AND some PEswitchs for the most
used CPUs.
So, perhaps the right question is:
If in a HUB900 I want to bridge some Ethernet-only modules
(PORTswitch or Repeaters) and some Ethernet-FDDI modules
like PEswitch, AND I want to connect all the above to an
external FDDI not-wrapped ring, DO I need 2 FDDI modules
in this HUB ?
Or is it possible to use only one ?
I can't use only a Concentrator 900MX because of the Ethernet
modules.
Many thanks in advance for your help,
Ciao Luciano

2952.5 | No extra module | MXOC00::CSILVA | | Mon Nov 06 1995 15:20 | 19 |
| OK
Let me see if this can help:
If the only FDDI connections are the ones from the
switches that make the link with the backbone for the Ethernets
(900EF y PESwitch)... (am I right?)
... and you dont have any FDDI stations, that need
a concentrator like the 900MX for conection to the ring (OK?)
So, you don't need any extra module just for linking
your hubs to the ring, you can, even, link a hub using the pair
of ports that come with any module.

| sounds like you want to use the FDDI ports on the EF to cable the hubs
together in an external ring run all ehternet across the backplanes
of the hubs put ethernet ports on the EF to the backplane to
switch between the FDDI and the ethernet

| Nope, those ideas won't work since he needs FDDI inside the Hub so that
he can connect the PEswitch 900TX. He also needs ethernets (via 900EF)
in the Hub to connect repeaters.
The cheapest way to go is to use a concentrator with your bridge,
although you may have already decided against that if you have no
stations that will connect directly to the FDDI ring.
Here are some other configs that will work and are cheaper than your
Drawing #2 in note #.2 . The first config shown below has the
advantage of not needing the 900EF if you have some hubs which will
only use 900TX.

2952.8 | OK 2 FDDI modules, thanks for the infos... | MLNCSC::BARILARO | | Tue Nov 07 1995 05:15 | 15 |
| Hi,
Thanks all for your reply, NETCAD::CURRIER on reply .6 center
my needs, I need the A/B port to cable the hubs together in an
external ring and put ethernet ports on the EF to the backplane
to connect the other Ethernet modules (Portswitch 900CP or 900TP),
AND connect the PEswitch to the FDDI backplane.
So I need 2 FDDI module, 1 900EF + 1 Concentrator 900MX or
2 900EF in this HUB. OK thanks all again for your help.
Ciao Luciano
