2875.0. "NFS-Problems with SUN" by HAN::JCARSTENS () Wed Oct 18 1995 05:32

    Hi,
    2 weeks ago we've installed at customer site 1 DECswitch900 EF
    and DECrepeater900 CP in a DEChub900. With HUbwatch we've generated
    1 FDDI-segment and 6 Ethernet-segments. On the existing DECbridge 900MX
    we connected 2 segments to the backplane, on the 900EF 4 segments and
    from the 900CP 6 segments. The existing DECconcentrator900MX, the 900EF
    and the DECbridge900MX we've connected to the FDDI-backplane. All
    modules have the newest firmwarelevel. On the concentrator are
    connected 3 DECunix-server, 1 HP-server and 1 SUN SPARC20 server
    (Solaris 4.2). The SUN-clients are connected to the 900CP.
    And now the problem:
    NFS between SUN-server/Sun-clients is working only (!!!) over the
    DECbridge900MX. If the customer tries to do NFS over the 900EF he
    gets the message "NFS server xxx not responding still trying".
    We've tried to test with IP-Fragmentation enabled on the 900EF, but
    no changes. We've exchanged the 900EF, no changes.
    The traffic form/to all other DEC or HP server is working.
    Is there anybody out there who can help?

    Could you provide a diagram showing the config and describing where the
    problem exists? And provide the firmware revs on all modules.

2875.2Forwarded to some folks for consumption & analysis....NETCAD::BATTERSBYWed Oct 18 1995 11:124
    I've forwarded this to some of our guru's here at LKG. Stay tuned
    hopefully for an answer.

    re .0

    You probably won't get much of an answer until you provide the data
    requested in .1

2875.4Firmware revisions and configHAN::JCARSTENSThu Oct 19 1995 07:4545
    Hi Bill,
    thanks for quick reading and answering my question.
    The firmware levels are:
    	DECbridge 900MX and DECswitch 900EF ----> DEFBA150.BIN
    	DECconcentrator 900MX		    ----> DEF6X301.BIN
    	PORTswitch 900CP		    ----> DECPM202.BIN
    	DEChub900			    ----> DMHUB402.BIN

    Now I will try to show you the configuratiion:

      		  A		  B		  C		  D
    		-----	    SUN	-----		-----		-----
    	   |----| 9 |	 G   ---| C |	  |-----| 9 |		| 9 |
    	   ||---| 0 |----   HP	| O |     | |---| 0 |		| 0 |    E
    	   |||--| 0 |  H |   ---| N |	  | |	| 0 |-----|    	| 0 |----
    	   ||||-| C |--	 |  DEC	| C |	  | |	| E |---| |	| M |  F |
    	   |||| | P |  | |   ---|   |	  | |	| F |	| |	| X |--- |
    	   |||| -----  | |	-----	  | |	-----	| |	-----   ||
           ||||        | |        ||      | |     ||    | |       ||    ||
    FDDI   |||| =======|=|================|=|===========|=|===========  ||
           ||||        | |                | |           | |             ||
    LAN1   |||| -------|-|----------------|-|-----------|-|-------------||-
           ||||          |                | |           | |             |
    LAN2   |||| ---------|----------------|-|-----------|-|-------------|--
           ||||                           | |           | |
    LAN3   ||||---------------------------|-|-----------|-|----------------
           |||                              |           | |
    LAN4   |||------------------------------|-----------|-|----------------
           ||                                           | |
    LAN5   ||-------------------------------------------|-|---------------
           |                                              |
    LAN6   |----------------------------------------------|---------------

	   Some more info for D: HW=v0/2,ro=v0.2
    	                  for C: HW=v1/2,ro=v0.4

    The problems is:

    	From the SUN connected to B, over FDDI to D, then over E or F to
    	G or H at A and from there to clients connected via 10B2 NFS is o.k.

    	But from SUN connected to B, over FDDI to C there's no NFS function
    	over the four connected ethernet ports to A.

    This may be related to a problem in DEFBA150.BIN (fixed in 1.5.2).
    I suggest that you upgrade your DEChub, DEF6X and DEFBA's to the revs in
    the 4.1 consolidated firmware kit.
