2855.0. "DH900 IP problem..." by CSC32::B_GOODWIN (MCI Mission Critical Support Team) Thu Oct 12 1995 18:55

I have just run into a strange problem. The display on my DH900 shows that I
don't have an In-band IP address set. But if I do a "show current setting" from
the setup port, it shows the adddress. I can't connect to via hubwatch and I
can't ping it. The services module in slot 8 seems to be alive and I have no
problem getting to it. I just set it up a few hours ago. The
following is from the "show current settings"

would care to look at it, send me mail. Otherwise I will reset it. I xx'ed out
the address because I don't want everyone in digital playing with it. ;-)

Well, if you look at the last piece of info on the line, it says that
it's not configured. What type of module is providing IP services for
that slot? Also, I've seen this happen and a reset with current
settings will sometimes clear the problem. Sometime the hub gets
confused and letting it re-initiate returns it to reality...

The "Not Configured" will show up in two circumstances

	- You've just entered the in-band IP address, or there has
just been a reset of MAM or IP server, and the communication
between MAM and server to set up IP services has not been
successful. This is the correct behavior if the module
selected for IP services doesn't support IP services. It's
incorrect when it was a communications error that could
	  have been retried.

	- IP services has been successfully configured and operating,
but suddenly it vanishes and all you see is "Not Configured".
This can happen when the IP server module has suddenly reset
while the MAM is trying to send IP traffic to it.

The problem is with the MAM's IP services state machine. When it
encounters an error, it sets the state to "Not Configured", which
is the same as if the user had never even entered an address. A
mam reset should fix this.

A software design fix is scheduled for our next major release,
next spring.

Til then, upgrade to the latest consolidated distribution kit -
DH900 V4.1.0, DETMM V2.0, etc. It will lower the number of these
occurrences, though not to zero.
