2786.0. "Hubwatch 4.1 - can't copy??" by KAOFS::R_YURKIW (reward those who bring bad news!!) Fri Sep 22 1995 14:14

    Ok so I am not a guru on ultrix (err digital unix).

    According to note 8.7 the latest hubwatch version 4.1 is now located on
    a unix box. It gives brief instructions on how to copy the files using
    decnet from this box but I am having no luck. Previously all the
    distribution of the hubwatch for windows software was located on

    NAC::NIPG:[MANAGE.WINDOWS]

    but there doesn't seem to be any software there anymore.

    when I try to get the files from the new location I get an error
    message saying file not found yet, I can do a directory of that location
    and see them (see actual screen output below). I am stumped. Can
    someone out there give me the proper command lines to use to copy this
    stuff down or can we put this software in the NAC system directory
    again for easy decnet access.

    As well will the new location allow the use of wildcards for the copy.

    MY OUTPUT.

2786.3hubwatch fails CRC check...KAOFS::R_YURKIWreward those who bring bad news!!Mon Sep 25 1995 12:3837
    Ed.

    I tried to load the files from NAC::NIPG:[HWWINV41] but had a bit of a
    problem.

    I used SPOOL COPY to copy the three disk*.exe files to my directory
    and then I used kermit to load them on my pc. I made sure that the
    files were loaded as binary files during the download.

    All the files explode properly.

    I go to install the software and the following happens.

    Disk 1 is inserted and install in run. I choose to install
    hubwatch/hubloader and netrider (no network). The first disk is
    installed with no problem.

    I am prompted to insert the second disk and shortly after it continues
    (as soon as the HUBWATCH.EXE file is 100% installed) I get an error
    message saying "HUBWATCH FAILS CRC CHECK". At this point the
    installation basically dies as I get continuous file extract errors and
    I am forced to abort.

    I tried downloading all the files twice and I tried to install it from
    both floppy and from my hard disk with the same result.

    Can you please check and verify that the installation is set up
    properly and if so do you have any suggestions on what I may be doing
    wrong??

    thanks.

2786.4try a new floppyEDWIN::TOMG::gulickThose dirty rings !!Mon Sep 25 1995 14:0410
I had the same problem with Disk 2.

Do a CHKDSK on your floppy to see that you have no bad blocks
or sectors because Disk 2 takes ALL 1.44 M so if you have any
bad blocks, you're SOL.

Best option is to try a newly formatted disk.

    I ran both chkdsk and scandisk on the floppy with no errors. I tried to
    use a new floppy just in case and the result was the same. I also did
    try to run it direclty from a directory on my hard disk (ie: no
    floppies at all) and the error message occurred in exactly the same
    place.

    I think there may be something wrong with the files as they currently
    sit on the system.

    As far as disk 2 taking all the available space either that statement
    is wrong or it may be a key to the problem. When I explode the DISK2.EXE
    file it produces two files:

    DISK.ID       45
    HUBV411.002   1223385

    according to the file size shown I should have plenty of room left on
    the floppy.

    Thanks for trying...by the way you did not say you were eventually
    successful with the installation. Were you??

    regards

2786.6Success.....KAOFS::R_YURKIWreward those who bring bad news!!Mon Sep 25 1995 16:1926
    Got it.

    I did some digging and found that in fact the exploded file HUBV411.002
    for disk #2 is about 200k bytes short.

    I went to BHUB and with help finally managed to copy the file off of
    the unix server.

    The correct size of this file should be 1457152 bytes.

    I replaced the file on my Disk #2 and the installation went off without
    any problems.

    I suggest that someone recheck the DISK2.EXE in
    NAC::NIPG:[MANAGE.HWWINV41] and recompile it to make sure the correctly
    sized file is in there. I believe that as of right now it is wrong.....

    regards

2786.7tis better to admit one's mistakes...NAC::FORRESTMon Sep 25 1995 17:368
    Somehow my disk2 got changed after I made my own masters and installed
    the kit on my PC. I just remade all 3 disks, exploded them, put them on
    diskettes, and installed again. It worked OK, so it looks like the
    kit is good.

    Sorry for all the trouble.

2786.9kit broken still on bhubIROCZ::PASQUALEWed Oct 25 1995 15:2611

    I recently built a kit from the hubw_pc directory on node bhub.
    Disk2 or disk3.exe contains a broken file (bad checksum) on
    dllasync.exe. Did you fix the files on Bhub or just
    nac::nipg:[nwwinv41]. And while we're at it, would it be too much
    trouble to locate the kits in the same place?

    regards,

    Ray.
