2778.0. "RFP help needed." by TROFS::WEBSTER (NIS, London, Canada) Tue Sep 19 1995 14:50
(cross posted in Brouter and DECNIS notes files)
I am responding to an LAN/WAN RFP from a long-time customer. This
is a public Board of Education in Windsor. I need to put together
a good response so they will continue to be our customer, or else
we will loose all the network. They are about to throw away a DECNIS
600, DEChub 90 and lots of other 900 hardware.
The customer currently has a DECNIS 600 connecting 4 LAN segments
to 1 WAN port. The LAN segments have PCs, lots of MACs, VAXes and
DECservers/MUXservers. There is also a Synoptics 3000, Cisco IGS
and a few DECrepeater 900TMs (standalone) installed. Internet access
is provided via a JANUS (sp?) firewall and BAYnet router.
The DECNIS WAN port is connected via leased line to DECbrouter 90T1
installed in DEChub90 (with DR90Ts and DS90L+). The IGS connects
via leased line to another IGS that has a Synoptics 3000 on the
remote LAN.
The MUXserver connect via leased lines to DECmuxes. This is used
for administration terminal and print services at the schools.
Management is currently done on a IBM PS2 with 2 boot procedures;
one for booting windows and HP OpenView to manage the IGSes, the
DECbrouter, sees the DECNIS and uses Optivity to manage the
Synoptics 3000s. The other boot is for using DECrou to config and
manage the DECNIS.
The RFP states that they will be moving to a Frame Relay network
provided by the local telco (Bell, which is also competing with
us on the RFP....they did the IGS/Synoptics install a year before
we did the DECNIS/DECbrouter/DEChub install). 42 sites will connected
to the FR net via 128K lines, except for the board office, which will
have a T1 link.
They need to route IP, IPX and Appletalk (DECNIS problem) between LAN
and WAN. They currently bridge, but would prefer to translate or
enacapsulate LAT traffic to reduce network load.
Each school location must support minimum 8 10BT and 8 terminal
connections. 8 high schools must have dual ethernet routers
(DECbrouter and Routeabout problem) to segment the adminstration
LAN from the academic LAN.
Router critera is - TCP/IP, IPX and Appletalk routing
frame relay support
hub connectivity
dial-on-demand connectivity
remote management with SNMP
traffic management features
2 serial interfaces
flash memory
Management critera is - standard MIB support
SQL database desirable
GUI based
Windows and MAC clients via Xterm
multiple views or groupings of objects
SNMP and SNMP2
RMON desirable
in-band and out-of-band support
The RFP is favouring a Cisco solution.
Are there ways we can use the current DECNIS and DEChub hardware
to our advantage? The DECNIS had been a thorn in our side because of
the Appletalk and none GUI management. What if we replace the NIS
with a RouteAbout 900????
