Hi I'm trying to locate an up-to-date book that talks about routers, bridges, repeaters in a multi-wire (Ethernet, FDDI) multi-protocol (IP, DECnet, LAT, NetBEUI) environment. I need a deeper understanding of how these work together. Thanks! tl

How about "Interconnections: Bridges and Routers" Radia Perlman Addison-Wesley ISBN 0-201-56332-0

Thanks for the recommendation. The DLN has a copy, so I've checked it out. It was written in 1992. Is that so old that I should seek a newer tome? tl

Shouldn't be too old. Radia Perlman used to work for Digital, and I believe is the mother of the Spanning Tree Protocol. It probably does not go into detail about routability/bridgeability of LAT or NetBui protocols, since these are more proprietary (so is DECnet, but it is a widely-discussed protocol suite in networking texts). The discussion of network layers and mapping of layers to equipment classes should still be valid. Just beware the "switching" buzzword. This can encompass what were traditionally viewed as bridges and repeaters. To my mind this blurs a well-defined distinction, although there are probably some justifiable hybrid functions, mixing repeating, bridging, and routing functions, the way brouters mix bridging and routing. |
