2714.0. "downgrade new DECswitch900EF?" by UTRTSC::GROOT_R (Ronald de Groot) Wed Sep 06 1995 11:56

    Hello,

    Is it possible to downgrade new DECswitch900EF to versie V1.4.
    If so can I use the V1.4 firmware from the DECbridge900MX or
    is the firmware not the same? The customer is not willing to
    used his new DECswitch900EF (5x) with V1.5 firmware because
    they also must have then HUBwatch 4.0 VMS! and have to upgrade
    the NAM and orther modules. (I known that HUBwatch 4.0 VMS is
    NA)

    Yes 1.4 firmware is compatible with both the DECbridge900MX and the
    DECswitch900EF.

2714.2Yes, but downgrade to (I think) rev 1.4.3NETCAD::BATTERSBYWed Sep 06 1995 13:1814
    Yes (unfortunately for your customer), the DECswitch900EF can
    be downgraded to 1.4 (please be sure to downgrade to 1.4.3
    rather than the straight 1.4 rev). The 1.4.3 (Bill Wade correct
    me if I've got the sub-rev wrong or not), has some fixes in it
    that are included in the wave 3 release (1.5), but are manageable
    with the wave 3 image of HUBwatch. It's too bad we couldn't loan
    some customers like yours a PC with HUBwatch 4.0 installed on it
    while they were waiting for the HUBwatch 4.0 VMS upgrade to become
    available. That way the customer could take full advantage of all the
    new features available with the full upgrade to all their modules
    including the DECswitch900EF.

    1.4 should be fine as long as the customer is not seeing any errors in the
    DECswitch900EF error logs. The 1.4.x images should only be given to
    those customers who are seeing the specific problems that they address.

    Thanks,

    The problem is not that we couldn't loan the customer a PC with
    HUBwatch 4.0 installed but the problem is that if we bring out
    new products with new firmware and orther firmware and software
    must be upgraded the customer will hear this 3 months ago!
    The total of new switches we must downgrade is 22 and also 6 NAM's
    from 4.0 to 3.1. This site will first test new software,firmware
    hardware in a seperate test network before it's goes in production.
    The customer is the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. This are sites were
    if something goes wronge you can read it in the papers a day later.

2714.5also needed old PEswitch firmwareUTRTSC::GROOT_RRonald de GrootFri Sep 08 1995 04:507
    Help, I also have needed the old V1.0.? PEswitch firmware. Can you
    give me a pointer or can you copy this images (DESBF1??.BIN) to me.
    I have now the total number of new! HUB products we must downgrade
    16x MAM, 20x DECcon900MX, 15x DECswitch900EF, 8x DECrep900TM and
    5x DECrep900TM. I am not happy with that but it is a nice order.

    I sent Ronald a pointer to DESBF 1.0.2.

2714.7Maybe just upgrade hub MAMs...?PTOJJD::DANZAKPittsburgher Sat Sep 09 1995 08:5525
    Just as a note of interest....

    I've upgraded the MAM's in hubs which were running and in production.
    It was my understanding that the hub would NOT cause a 'blip' on the
    networks at all.

    In actuality, it does cause a second or two 'blip' in the network as
    the modules and MAM talk after the upgrade.....but.....the ONLY traffic
    that noticed it was SNA over Ethernet. It seemed that FDDI and
    Ethernet stuff was fairly immune to the hub upgrade/reset.

    So, it may be possible to upgrade a PRODUCTION HUB and only cause a
    second or two 'blip' that the higher levels of the protocols would
    easily tolerate. (Bill Wade or Bob Battersby may have more detail on
    this...)

    Just a thought that may make them feel a bit easier about the upgrade.

    Also, upgrading a concentrator or DECswitch 900EF does cause a major
    reset on those modules. (It takes minutes and is non-trivial from a
    time standpoint.)

    regards,
    j
