2691.1 | Sorry | NETCAD::HERTZBERG | History: Love it or Leave it! | Wed Aug 30 1995 10:33 | 8 |
| Sorry, no. That configuration is not supported. Only the DECrepeater
90T-16 can use the DETAX's AUI port.
We did not qualify that configuration because, as you point out, using
the AUI on the 90TS means you lose the thinwire, which is the network
backbone in the string.

2691.2 | Very confused now ... | SNOFS1::KHOOJEANNIE | Humpty Dumpty was pushed | Thu Aug 31 1995 03:06 | 13 |
| Marc, thanks for your response.
When you say it is not supported, what exactly do you mean?
Do you mean that it doesn't actually work?
i.e. that if I use a 90TS with a DETAX, that I cannot transmit or receive
any signals over the AUI port (when the thinwire is not being used)?
If this is the case, then why?

| I don't know whether or not it would work, because I haven't tried it.
My guess is that typically it would function OK.
The actual wiring is in place. The only reason it might not be
completely functional is that the 90TS AUI design included isolation
transformers on the module itself (none in the rear cover), while the
90T-16/DETAX AUI design put the isolation transformers on the rear
cover (none on the module). So if you use the 90TS with the DETAX AUI
port, there would be two sets of isolation transformers in the connection.
This might degrade signals to the point that it wouldn't always work
under worst-case conditions.
Since we decided not to support it, we didn't qualify it (DS-134, FCC,
etc.), which guarantees that it isn't supported. ;^)

2691.4 | AUI not functional in DETAX | NETCAD::STARKESON | | Thu Aug 31 1995 14:17 | 6 |
| It does not work.
The firmware does not currently allow the 90TS to configure the
AUI port in the DETAX.

2691.5 | That does it | NETCAD::HERTZBERG | History: Love it or Leave it! | Thu Aug 31 1995 15:32 | 2 |
| Aha! So the "not supported" I've been talking about is enforced by
system firmware.

2691.7 | Any status change? | TROFS::WEBSTER | NIS, London, Canada | Mon Feb 12 1996 00:07 | 25 |
| Has there been any change to this support since the last firmware
update?
Seems a shame to have to sell my customer a 16 port and 90FS in
order for him to get 4 connections in a seperate maintenance building
(need management).
Was hoping I could do the following.
+---+ +---+----+
| | | D | D |
| |+---+ +---+| E | E |
| || >~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~< || T | T |
| |+---+ +---+| A | M |
| | ^ ^ | X | I |
| | +--FO. transceivers---+ +---+----+
+---+
DECswitch 900EE
I will now have to sell the 90FS and 90T16 in the MultiStack (added
cost of 90FS but lower cost of 90T16... which is now less $$$s than
the 90TS). I haven't worked out the numbers, but I imagine the solution
to be a few $100s more. Drives up the price/managed_port.

2691.8 | What about this ... | SNOFS1::KHOOJEANNIE | Humpty Dumpty was pushed | Mon Feb 12 1996 01:55 | 10 |
| No change so far, but wouldn't it be preferable to use either:
- a DECrepeater 90T-16 with the AUI, in conjunction with a DECagent 90
(given the recent price cut in the DECagent)
or
- a DECrepeater 90TS standalone, which has an AUI on the rear cover?

2691.9 | DENMA price reduce drastically | TROFS::WEBSTER | NIS, London, Canada | Mon Feb 12 1996 14:15 | 9 |
| Checked the price of the DECagent and was surprised to see how much
the price was reduced. I'll use that with the 90T16.
As for Jeannie last comment, the previous replies stated that it was
not supported (AUI port on DETMI-SA), and was my question if it
would be supported with new firmware.

No, Jeannie did not say to order a DETMI-UA (which isn't orderable and
won't work), but to order a DETMI-AA which is a standalone cover with
an AUI port, but then the thinwire port become inactive when the AUI is
used.
