| Engineering has been looking at this problem since last Friday.
When you say ALL 900MXs with this firmare are manifesting this problem
could you please clarify that the 900MXs doing this have NOT had actual
fan failures but have been operational all along? Also what ROM
versions are the 900MXs running? Are all 900MXs at 3.0.1?
Hubwatch is 4.0.1 OSF? Hubwatch Windows 4.0.1?

2563.6 | Consistently Red & Yellow 4 ever (NOT) | NETCAD::GORDON | | Tue Aug 01 1995 10:09 | 16 |
| This seems to be a concentrator problem. We (systems Test) have a
couple of concentrator's that always report fan problems. The key here
is "IF the fan's ever had a problem" the hubwatch colors will be
red/OSF & Yellow/DOS.
I did some testing by pulling a fan wire off the concentrator, this in
turn flags the MAM (lcd reports concentrator goes nofatal failure , and
then states FAN problem). If the module is removed and then fixed (wire
back on fan in this case) the concentrator fans will always be seen in
hubwatch as Red/Yellow for their respective hubwatch platforms.
I have even put this concentrator in another HUB and the fans are
displayed incorrectly by hubwatch. Where is hubwatch getting this info,
well there are only 2 places. 1) MAM or 2) concentrator itself.
maybe in the fast path code that hubwatch does. (directly to module)
This has been formally QAR'd so stay tuned.

The 900MXs with the new firmware have NOT had actual fan failures.
I used Hubwatch 4.0.1 OSF and Hubwatch Windows 4.0.1. When I looked
at the ROM version and the fans are all green in UNIX and Windows?????
The ROM version is HW=V2 RO=V1.2 Because I have seen this with my own
eyes I have power down the HUB and now the problem is back again.
Fans are red in Digital/Unix and yellow in Windows! When the fans
where green I was not able to zoom in the DECconcentrator? FDDI conf.
was also gone. This is for my (digital) own HUB but the customer has
the same probleem.
Ronald
Note: I can connect the HUB to easynet if you like?

re:.5
No major changes (bug fix)
have been introduced in 0.1 or 0.2 just manufacturing purpose, but i could try
it
re. 6
well i have tested your scenario and i can't confirm your result...
_ Remove my 900MX from my HUB900
_ Open the cover and disconnect one fan power cable.
_ push again the 900mx on the Hub900
_ From Hubwatch Windows fans appears in yellow and Red under Unix
_ Remove my 900Mx and reconnect the power cable for the culprit fan.
_ Now under Hubwatch (all platforms) Fans appears well good GREEN..
even if restarting Hubwatch,HUB900, Power in the Room or whatever
others ideas.....

| Tomorow I will upgrade one HUB with two concentrators and look again.
When this HUB gives also concentrators with red fans you can look in
it with HUBwatch because this HUB is already on Easenet.
I have send the customer a mail and ask if all the concentrators
have the same problem or only one or two? I communicate only by
internet mail with this customer (after he has first logged a call
true normal channels) and must sometimes wait for a few days. He is
traveling trouout hole western europa to setup HUB's and NETview.

2563.10 | Yellow or red - that is the question | NETCAD::FORINO | | Wed Aug 02 1995 14:37 | 5 |
| Speaking on the HUBwatch front there is a problem in the Windows
version displaying the wrong colors (yellow when it should be red).
The UNIX version is accurate. The inconsistent sensor colors for
Windows will be fixed in the V4.1 release.

2563.11 | tryit other HUB900 same result | UTRTSC::GROOT_R | Ronald de Groot | Thu Aug 03 1995 08:41 | 14 |
| John,
Thanks for your reply. I have upgrade a HUB900 on easynet now. First I
upgrade the HUB900 to (HW=F,RO=V1.1.6).SW=V4.0.2 and after that I look
to the Chassis Environmental Summary with HUBwatch for VMS,Unix and
Windows. All fans green.
After that I upgrade 1 Concentrator900MX (there are 2 in this HUB)
anD looked again (HW=v2,RO=v1.2),SW=3.0.1.
Now the fans in this Concentrator900MX are red with VMS,Unix and
Windows (yellow). and green voor the Concentrator900MX who is at 2.8.0
The orther Concentrator is at Rom Version V1.0! but not upgraded yet.

2563.12 | only 2 of 3 startup on insertion | NETCAD::GORDON | | Thu Aug 03 1995 10:48 | 14 |
| I got some more info here.
The scenario I am seeing as reported in .6 is reproducable in 2
concentrators out of 5 that I have in my hubs. Another thing noticed
was if you insert a concentrator into the hub the bottom 2 fans will
startup right away. As soon as the module OK led comes on, the top fan
then energizes and now all 3 are "on" This may be some sort of race
condition because the LCD does (if you have fast eyes) report fan
failure and then states module UP.
I thought at first I put the fan wires back on the wrong fans and thats
why they were always complaining but I don't think thats the case.
I'll take apart a good def6x and see if the fan sequence is any
different.

| I have also downgraded to v3.0.0 and the problem goes away.
However, with upgrading this module back to the shipping version
the problem comes back. (ie fans are flagged as red/yellow) So as I
said in .6? (if the fans ever had a failure, it's there 4ever (Hope
NOT)
re-.12
Also with v2.8.0 the fan scenario is the same. ie: bottom 2 fans start
when module gets inserted and the last fan kicks on when the module is
up/online.

| RE .12 & .15 - only 2 fans at first...
The module only fires up the first 2 fans so as to not
draw more than the allotted current for unidentified modules.
After the module boots up, identifies itself to the hub
and negociates for power, the 3rd fan fires up. This usually
takes less than a minute.

gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/DEC/hub900/firmware then updated with this
