2494.0. "DECbridge 90's - Smoking & Stop Fowarding" by PCBUOA::MANDEVILLE () Mon Jul 10 1995 11:46

We have been having an high number of DECbridge 90 (DEWGB) failures. There
are two different types of problems.

1. A number of these bridges die due to internal components burning. So far
we have lost 10 - 12. It is the same components in all of the bridges we
have lost. Is there a known problem with these???

So far we have not received much response from anyone in the DEChub group
although I'm not sure if we have reached the right person yet.

Who can I contact regarding theses problems or is there another way to
   escalate this issue?

2. We have also been experiencing problems where the bridges will stop
forwarding. Sometimes a reset will clear it, other times we have to swap
the bridge. We have put an analyzer on the LAN to try to determine if there
is something causing the bridge to stop forwarding but haven't come up
with anything yet. We have also monitored the counters to try to predict
when this will happen but we don't see anything unusual before it hangs.

The Bridge Forwarding State LED comes on when this happens.

When this does occur you cannot reach the bridge via Hubwatch or MOP.

Any help, suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

    JOhn,

I sure hope you get an answer to this as I have replaced 6 DB90s
in the last week, and I'm still seeing variations on the not forwarding
problems. I have two Bridges at the moment that go into this state for
45 seconds and then carry on passing traffic again.

I also had two swap three backplanes, one of which went bad when
a power supply blew up and buggered the backplane, Bridge, DECagent and
    two DECpreater 90c's.

Nat, Rich,

I've responded to John Mandeville relative to the hardware failures he has
experienced with the DEWGB. These are likely dc/dc converter failures (wear
out failures of the DELTA converter). NPS has recently received a number of
calls of this type. The converter is being replaced with a new part, however
the new converter is not currently available. ECO's have been written for the
bridge and other products affected by this change. Will provide new revision
as soon as the new part is introduced. I've asked Ken Rauhala to respond to
John on the "no forwarding" problem.

Ken,

John Mandeville has posted note 2494 in the HUB_mgmt notes file reporting a
no forwarding problem with the bridge. Would you please contact him for the
specifics of this problem. John's DTN is 244-6545. His node is
PCBUOA::MANDEVILLE.

Thanks,
Michele

Just wanted to let you know we are also experiencing the "no
forwarding" condition. Intermittently the forwarding led comes on solid
and the bridge needs to be power failed. We have very few details at
    this time.
