I'd like to put in a request that port 3 on the DECswitch 900EF and PEswitch 900TX have the ability to be re-directed to the backplane via the serial console management. I've got some situations where this is the only way to run HUBwatch, but in order to run HUBwatch to the hub, I need an Ethernet connection from the front panel to the hub lan but I can't do this until I get HUBwatch connected... Or am I doing something wrong when I only have switches in my DEChub?

If you designate the switch as the IPS, then you don't need any backplane connections. The MAM IP services go through the management channel which is directly connected to the module, there is no "hub lan". -Mike

I always carry a BN25F 10BaseT Flip cable (or two) with me to a new DEChub installation. Using it, you can directly connect your laptop to the DECswitch, and set up the hub as you like it. But my poor laptop has only 8 meg of memory, and a XIRCOM PCMCIA card, and a monochrome monitor. So I cannot see the LAN INTERCONNECT etches, and sometimes complex module configs time out my PC. But it works for setting stuff up. JR

Note that you would not need to do this on a PEswitch, which is cross-wired internally on its ports, like a repeater. Always check to see whether there is an "X" marked next to a 10BaseT port, to determine its polarity. You will find that the PEswitch has "X" marked on all of its 10BaseT ports. Also, there is a convenient gizmo which you can plug into a 10BaseT connector to reverse whatever its polarity is - this is even better than carrying around both types of wires. We don't sell it but Jim Kroening should be be able to point you to the vendor who does. Anil |
