2451.0. "Cheaper low end for resellers?" by PTOJJD::DANZAK (Pittsburgher ) Fri Jun 30 1995 10:20

Yesterday I visited a very loyal Digital reseller who sells Synoptics,
Chipcom etc., in addition to Digital. However Digital is always their
lead EXCEPT in low end work groups. (i.e. users who need 8-32 ports)
Individual DECrepeater 90s cost too much and are not easy to stack
while the DECrepeater 900 is a bit pricy when compared to the unmanaged
    Synoptics (pardon Bay) line etc.

It's a bit sad to see them lead at the low end with this. We have a
gap there in which we just don't compete and, when it comes time for
that low end customer to upgrade, they have got to shift product lines
or stay with what they know. (And, hey if you get a product you like -
i.e. like low end good value Synoptics) you go with it.

Are we planning to fill this low end in for the low end resellers?
Have we compared to the low end Synoptics stuff and can we meet it's
price/features? (I know that ours can have better but the other stuff
is 1/2 the cost - unmanaged - can we offer that as an option - an
    unmanaged 32 porter?)

    Just curious,
    j

Well, you'll shortly have an manageable, low-cost 16-port product to
sell into these accounts... that should help quite a bit.

As for futures, let's say we have plans for that marketplace. Stay
    tuned.
