Could someone please let me know how to do this or point me to the
documentation where the bootp information is located so I can rebuild
my 90ts to be a working module?

| Note #2 shows that the 90TS needs the file detmi110.bin.
Read the _READ_ME.txt file and the on-line help for setting up BOOTP.
(Easy for me to say). Maybe someone has some more specific steps
to follow...?

I can successfully use the TFTP server to download other devices. It
seems intuitive how to set it up for other things. I know that the 90ts
needs detmi110.bin. However, after setting all that up in the tftp
server, it STILL won't successfully respond to the many bootp requests
coming in. It would be nice if the tftp server had a log function to
show what the bootp request was requesting to I could debug this. This
is like to trying to disassemble a bomb in the dark with the right
tools but if I can't see the color of the wires, what good is it?

I've always wondered about this... Why do bombers in movies always use the
same color codes in their bombs? Is it because they know the police will
discover the bomb and will know how do disarm it? If so, why not just put
an on/off switch on the darned thing...
I think I'll take the afternoon off now,

2410.5 | Need to setup default file name? | ROGER::GAUDET | Because the Earth is 2/3 water | Fri Jun 23 1995 14:39 | 16 |
| Have you looked at the NetRider online help?
Help -> Contents -> Controlling Access To Files -> File Names. Check out the
section on Default Load File Name.
Something to try (if you haven't already):
From the NetRider window, select Config -> Server and add the 90TS' MAC and IP
address. Then select Config -> Files. Enter "default" in the Request File Name
box and "detmi110" in the Local File Name box (do NOT include the extension).
Make sure the detmi110.bin file is in the NETRIDER\LOAD directory and start the
loader.
Disclaimer: I've never actually done this.

Roger,
I've tried variations of of. The local filename box accepts
device/directory info, so I put that info in there and did not put the
file in the netrider/load directory. However, I did not try that
specific combination. I'll try it and post the results.

2410.7 | I figured out how to make bootp work! | STRWRS::KOCH_P | It never hurts to ask... | Sat Jun 24 1995 12:16 | 25 |

Well, I figured it out. First of all, the printed MAC address on the
front was slightly illegible and I thought the last character was a "B"
instead of an "E". I used OpenVMS bootp to figure this out. It would be
nice if the Netrider loader kept a log of bootp requests & addresses.
I kept staring at the problem and at 1:30 it hit me. The load files for
the DECservers which the Netrider loader usually loads were there
without extensions. I looked in the NETRIDER\LOAD directory and indeed
the file were there without extensions. I renamed the file DETMI110.BIN
to DETMI110 (no extensions). I then added the "default" entry pointing
to DETMI110 and the next request, it LOADED!
However, after the 90TS loaded, all the lights continued to blink at
the same time. I powered down the unit and it booted fine. I think
there is a problem with the 90TS bootp sequence in that it does NOT do
a final reset.
Who will be looking into this problem?
Also, is there some reason reason bootp for these devices asks for
"default"? If every device asks for "default", seems a little
brain-dead to me. Why can't each device ask for its 5 character Digital
part number (detmi in this case) so if the problem exists and a PC
needs to reboot it, you don't have to be so hands on to make it happen?

It is a little brain dead. The NetRider BOOTP loader was a
"quick-time-to-market" project, and there are features we would have
liked to include. Associating load file names with MAC adddresses is
one of them. This feature is present in every Unix bootpd implementation
that I've seen. You might expect to see an enhancement like this
feature in future releases on the NetRider loader.

Dave
