2348.0. "token ring and FDDI + NT" by CGOOA::BARNABE (Guy Barnabe - Digital Canada) Tue Jun 06 1995 14:46

Can anyone share any experiences regarding the attached? I need to know
basic issues, and more importantly, is this the right way to get more
network throughput to the 2100 (that is using something like a few CNX stuffed
with token ring and FDDI cards)?

   Guy

A customer is currently using bridged token ring netowrk to connect
his PCs to his nice new 2100 Alpha NT system. They are currently
only using netbeui. They have about 300 pcs on 5 rings coming together in a
Crosscomm box.

He is expecting throughput problems on the token ring card in the NT server
and is very interested in using an FDDI card in the 2100. He wants
Digital to recommend the best network giblets to connect his
token ring network to FDDI.

I need to get a feel for any concerns that need to be addressed with this
topology, and would appreciate any advice.

I know that netbeui is not routable, so I would expect to recommend
a token ring to FDDI bridge of some sort.

Feedback greatly appreciated.

   Guy

We have tested several configurations in the System Integration labs for Sable
(2100) and Turbo Laser (8400/8200). We have not tested an extensive
configuration (large) as you mentioned, but we have tested extreemly data
intensive application; for example: video-in-demand and large file transfers
(1000000+ blocks).

The configuration that is of interest to you is this one:

Sable with Token Ring to the hub MAU
Sable with Token Ring to the hub MAU
Demi-Sable with Token Ring to the hub MAU
Turbo Laser with DEFPA (FDDI) to FDDI (in the hub)

We were able to view multiple movies served of the Sable and transfer the
very large files at the same time, with good performance.

Thanx, but I am looking for suggestions around the FDDI to Token ring
brouter area, ie recommended brouters, gotchas, etc.
