| The current firmware version (v2.8) for the DECconcentrator 900MX
does not support the FDDI ports on the high-end docking station.
This is because the high-end docking station became available too
late in the firmware release cycle. However, the next release
will fully support the high-end docking station.

| Realize that what we HAVE been selling is the ability to do that (i.e.
use the high end docking station, ONEhub etc..)
Are there any other restrictions with V3.1 stuff? Will EVERYTHING work
with V4.0 stuff? i.e. DECswitch 9000TX, DECswitch 900EF and
DECconcentrator?
Thanks,

John, just for clarifications sake, what did you assume worked
with what relative to the DECswitch 9000TX, DECswitch 900EF,

AND - it has been presented in ALL THE DAMN TRAINING that it could be
done that way - i.e. utilize SMF fiber (because of lack of MOD PMDs on
the EF which KILLS us in large installs!) And use of a DECswitch 900TX
for a small workgroup to FDDI server etc.

If anyone who attended net academy is selling that it is
either because they were sleeping or thought they had something
more important to do during the hub session because the fact that
only the PEswitch supported it today was covered. All FDDI capable
modules will support it with the updates and it can be configured
from the setup port you DO NOT ned HUBwatch.

Of the two bridges/switches, (900EF & 900TX), the only one I
know (with wave 2 code), that supported the use of the high
end docking station FDDI, is the PEswitch 900TX. It of course only
supports it as A,B ports (until of course the wave 3 release becomes
available, then all kinds of neat stuff can be done). Also, in the
DECswitch 900EF release notes for Firmware Version V1.4.0, it does
state on page 3 that... "Although the DECswitch 900EF module can be
configured into a DEChub ONE-MX docking station, the FDDI ports on
this docking station cannot be used for this firmware release."
So there was some verbage put in the release note stating that the
900EF with V1.4.0 code could not use the docking station FDDI ports.
But apparently this did not get communicated cleanly through other
channels as you have mentioned John.

2285.12 | We need to better communicate it | PTOJJD::DANZAK | Pittsburgher  | Fri May 19 1995 00:29 | 10 |
| Bob - unfortunately the reality is that folks get the release notes
AFTER they buy the product - which means that then folks like me get to
discover it, clean it up and get a customer angry about not
understanding BEFORE they buy.
Simply put - we GOTTA communnicate this better (i.e. restrictions etc.)
to assure that customers KNOW what they're buying and are happy.
(Fortunately my case 2morrow is a PEswitch (grin))

HIGHLIGHTS
o Provides redundant power capability for all existing and planned "rack
and stack," standalone DEChub 900 modules
o Supports FDDI ModPMD ports for PEswitch 900TX modules when used in a
single slot, rack and stack configuration
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The DEChub ONE-MX is a flexible single slot hub chasis providing 90 watts of
power for attached DEChub 900 modules. When two DEChub ONE-MX units are
configured in a "piggy-back" fashion with a power cable connected between
them, the new hub offers automatic redundant power failover capability for
all existing and planned DEChub 900 modules.
For existing DEChub 900 Ethernet modules, network connectivity is supported
through an AUI port for connecting to a standard Ethernet backbone as well
as an out-of-band management port. FDDI, which is currently supported only
by the PEswitch 900TX, is provided through two modular PMD (Physical Media
Dependent) ports. For FDDI applications, the DEChub ONE-MX utilizes the
existing FDDI ModPMD (Modular PMD) ports (Single Mode Fiber, Multi Mode
Fiber, and UTP cable) used on Digital's GIGAswitch product and
DECconcentrator 900MX modules. When used with all DEChub 900 modules, the
DEChub ONE-MX hub provides redundant power for these standalone rack and
stack applications, meeting the user need for fault tolerance in a stackable
product.
Product Positioning
Providing redundant power and FDDI support, the new DEChub ONE-MX is a
higher-end version of the existing DEChub ONE single slot hub (DEHUA-C*).
The DEChub ONE-MX (DEF1H) is backwards-compatible with the current DEChub
ONE. All full-height modules will be able to utilize the new single slot hub
chasis as well as the redundant power capabilities. A firmware upgrade may
be needed for the module itself in order to utilize limited HUBwatch
capabilities. The DECconcentrator 900MX and DECswitch 900EF will be able to
access the FDDI ports with a firmware upgrade that will be available in May.
FDDI Single Mode Fiber (SMF) is supported through the SMF PMD slots
(DEFXS-AA), and can be installed in both PMD slots simultaneously. Caution
must be used when installing the SMF PMD slots to ensure that the fiber does
not exceed the break radius. Digital recommends that a qualified service
person perform the installation of all ModPMD slots.
BENEFITS
o Provides a redundant power option for standalone DEChub 900 product
applications when the fault tolerance power is critical.
o Allows PEswitch 900TX FDDI ports to be used in a standalone, single slot,
rack and stack configuration.
